Is this EP a 5-star record as everyone else says? No. Is it worth buying? Yes. Conte is an independent musician doing his thing. Support him! Support local music! He recorded and mixed this whole record by himself; which you have to admit, that's pretty gnarly. With that said, you get the feeling that having to focus on so many things (mixing, editing, technical details, setting up instruments, etc.) may have distracted him from giving his all to this EP. Perhaps. Or maybe he just hasn't perfected his craft yet? I have seen Conte's work on YouTube and I know that he will release something amazing one day, but this record isn't it. As for the songs themselves, which are a pleasing mix of electronic beats and synths mixed with acoustic guitar: "Starlight" is a wonderful tune that really showcases his talent as a singer. The song is really well crafted and full of intricate detail that will have you hitting the repeat button every time. "Yeah Yeah Yeah" really didn't do it for me. It was hard to swallow that chorus after listening to such a great song before it. "Tick Tock" is probably the second best song on this record. It has the makings of a great demo that could potentially lead to an arse-kicking single. "Unfrozen" is another dud. While not as bad as track two, it does start to get annoying after a while. I feel perhaps he was experimenting/cutting his teeth with his Vox on this one. (And kudos to him for that.) My biggest gripe is that this whole record felt short-lived. Before you know it, it's all over. I really look forward to an LP release! Conte will be a better musician/composer by then, no doubt. Hopefully it'll include some more acoustic instruments, like drums! His side project, Pomplamoose, has a good dose of electronic and acoustic instruments. That's what I hope to hear on his next release. Good work, Jack! Give us more!

What is electronica anyway? I don't even think I like electronica. It conjures up images of annoying rave kids sucking on day-glo pacifiers, but maybe I've got it wrong. Forget the categorization; this is artistry. You won't believe this guy's voice on "Starlight": it's perfect - it's like some sugary, butter-laden dessert you don't regret for an instant. It makes me feel as if I'm being jettisoned right through the center of the night sky. "Yeah Yeah Yeah" absolutely must be enjoyed in video form as well. (See YouTube and MySpace Music.) That's the thing about Jack Conte; apparently he cannot be contained or creatively restrained, and who'd even want to try limiting him? He plays multiple instruments (not just synthesizer!) and the pictures he paints for us are surreal and familiar, like childhood memories or abstract dreams you can't quite recall. He calls many of these pieces "videosongs", which is to say that they are only partially complete in the listening; there is the added visual component as well and I've come to think of many of them as inextricably linked. Even if you see the video only once, you'll remember the way it perfectly complemented the music each time you hear the songs. (Remember, artists get 91% of the profits from MP3 downloads. I like having a CD to hold; that's why I bought both!) I think you're wildly imaginative and original, Jack! Thanks for the fun! www.myspace.com/myspacetulip
