notes

October 31, 1991 was a very important day in hip-hop history. On this day, Ice Cube released his sophomore LP "Death Certificate" and the Geto Boys released their classic "Minds Playin' Tricks On Me". This is also the day that Complex officially declared himself an MC, as he blessed his peers with 16 bars at a 9th grade Halloween dance. Since then, Complex has earned a reputation in San Diego as a supreme lyricist.

As one of San Diego's most highly regarded MC's, Complex is on a mission to prove that the west coast is more than just gangsta raps and gun play. He has been making noise on the San Diego hip-hop scene for the past five years, and does not plan to stop anytime soon. Complex came of age in the late 80's and early 90's wave of gang violence and crack cocaine. Influenced by artists such as N. W. A., Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Brand Nubian, Ice-T, Public Enemy and 2-Pac, Complex developed a different rhyme style than most.

Complex has always focused on blending metaphors, similes and word play with social commentary from a west coast perspective. Though he has often been tagged as a "battle rapper", Complex is at his best when addressing social topics and giving food for thought within powerful punch lines.

With that being said, it is to no surprise that in 2001, Complex graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Sociology. He is currently pursuing his Master's of Arts degree in Counseling at the very same school he graduated from a few years back. When asked about this accomplishment, Complex stated, "I usually don't go around telling people that I graduated from college, because people tend to want to put you in a box. I've always found myself choosing to dumb down, so that people could relate to me more. Now I just try to lace their ice cream with vitamins."

In February 2004, Complex released his debut album West Coast MC'n, which received praise as one of the best albums from a local artist in the hometown of San Diego. With production by Cricet, Steve Vicious and Mark Sweat; as well as empirically sharp lyrics, this CD is regarded as a "must have" for all those in love with Hip Hop. To date, West Coast MC'n has sold over 1,500 copies locally (San Diego) in addition to overseas sales in Japan, Norway, and London.

Complex's latest release, State Of Mind, is a step forward in regards to content and maturity. With the same production team and guest appearances by E-Mortal Gang, Cee Wee 3, Googie Monsta and Bay Loc, this album is destined to become an underground classic. When asked about State Of Mind, Complex stated, "I tried to express all aspects of my personality. I get political, I battle rap, and then I party and have fun all on the same disc. The homies came through and spiced it up. I'm just trying to take a step in the right direction. Hip Hop needs its medicine and State Of Mind is the anecdote".
