Finally a record that captures the amazing energy that the Heather Combs Band brings to the stage. With 2 drummers, Trumpet, Fiddle, Bass and Guitar pounding out new and old favorites, we bet that by the end you'll be sweating too.

notes

They have no lead guitar player. That's right. None. Zip. Nada. No screaming solos out of a Marshall stack, no one sliding across the floor on their knees during the pinnacle of a solo. Moves like that are so 80's. Really. They've ditched the mullets and stepped into a new era of the Heather Combs Band. Not that they ever really had mullets. Well, at least not recently. Paul had a mullet in 1994, but we digress. When you hear Heather Combs (Guitar/Vocals), James Greenfield (Percussion/Vocals), Jeff Bordes (Trumpet), Paul Everett (Bass), Bob Tatum (Drums) and Janese Hurley (Violin), you won't miss the screaming solos of a lead guitar player.

Playing shows throughout the west coast, the Heather Combs Band has established itself as a force to be reckoned with. They thrive on the stage and bring an energy so infectious it's hard to withstand -- go ahead and try. Before you know it, you'll find yourself laughing, moving and singing along. This band isn't afraid to be real -- to rip open their chest and bare it all for the sake of the music. Every song is riddled with heart and fire. Each show is an experience all it's own, a conversation of laughter and tears.

The band started in 1996 when Heather Combs first picked up the guitar. Quite the hack at first, she managed to get control of how that thing worked and began to write. Now, with three records in the bag and another on the way, there's no stopping her. There is a raw and magnetic quality to Heather's voice that when combined with her powerful songs create something captivating and rare. When she steps onto the stage it's as if she is walking through your front door, sitting down on the couch in your living room and playing song after song just for you. With her guitar in hand, she begins spilling out the words with emotion and honesty, just as she felt them when she first began scribbling them down. And now it's not just Heather sitting there in your living room. Now there are 6 of them. What will the neighbors think with all that noise?

In it from the start has been the drumming/vocals of James Greenfield and they are an integral part of the HCB sound. The aggressive passion with which James plays percussion makes you happy you aren't his hands but glad that you've got ears. Sliding in to fill those illustrious lead guitar shoes (get it?), trumpet-guru and longtime friend Jeff Bordes was the next to join the band. Jeff's boyish good looks and charm, not to mention incredible talent, has brought many a listener to the shows and their knees. You won't believe what this guy can do with a plunger.

In need of some steady rocking, rock steady bassman Paul Everett joined the group shortly thereafter. (Damn this is getting cheesy). The addition of Paul and drummer Bob Tatum added the thump that had been missing. With Paul and Bob laying it down with vigor and reckless abandon it all just fell into place. The Heather Combs Band was growing up... but, still something was missing, something just wasn't right. That's when a fresh young face, fresh off the boat from Alaska (well okay fresh off a plane but that doesn't sound as cool) joined in on the violin. The fresh young face was Janese Hurley and the result was perfection, the Promised Land, Welcome back, Cotter. Wind em' up, boys, here we come.

Now a united front, the Heather Combs Band is on the move. In the last few years they've played shows with Kasey Chambers, Dave Alvin, Tom Petty, Steve Earle, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks, Todd Snider, Joan Jett, Los Lobos and David Lindley - just to name a few. They're on the road. They're in the studio. They're daring to bare it all. They're telling the stories that we've all lived, that we all know by heart and their bare-fisted approach is electrifying. Come on, jump in, let your hair down and enjoy the ride...

Had never heard of Heather Combs Band until I saw them bring down the house at the Sunset Magazine Celebration week-end in Menlo Park in May, 2005. As a matter of fact, my daughter was babysitting down the block from Sunset on Willow Road, could hear the music and she called on my cell phone to say whoever that group is, buy a CD immediately! Thats how we discovered CD baby at the same time. Will be purchasing another Heather Combs offering, as we love Live at the Fox.

not exactly the west coast version of melissa ferrick, although that almost seems to be the goal. but there are definitely some good lyrics (when you can distinguish them), and it sounds like they're having fun.

  • Perfect!

Typically I find "live" CDs to come up a bit short, but this is by far the best of the Heather Combs CDs. It encapsulates what sets this band apart -- great musicianship, engaging songwriting, and the ability to generate excitement. In short, they blow the house down.
