notes

In a scene where 'I'm a singer-songwriter' is said almost as often as 'Hey look, there's a Starbucks', Heather Combs has managed to rise to the top as one of San Francisco's finest. There is a rawness, a magnetism to Heather's voice and songs that's so rare, so captivating. When she steps onto the stage it's as if she is walking through your front door and sitting down on the couch in your living room to play song after song just for you. Her guitar in hand, spilling out words as honestly as she felt them the moment she first scribbled them down.

Born in Gainesville, Florida and raised by wolves - wait, no, wrong story, sorry - Heather was always intrigued by music. Her prized possession as a child was a vinyl copy of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" that she carried everywhere - even after it warped. She knew every word by heart. Just ask the neighbors. Finally she found her way to a guitar and the rest is history.

Since fleeing from the East Coast to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1997, Heather has released 3 critically acclaimed records in less than 5 years ("Guilty" in 1997, and "To the Good Times" in 2000 and "Feel Like Flying" in 2002). In the last year alone, she and her band have opened up shows for The Who, Kasey Chambers, Dave Alvin, Tom Petty, Steve Earle, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks, Todd Snider, Joan Jett, Los Lobos and David Lindley.

With Heather on guitar/harmonica/vocals, James Greenfield on percussion and vocals, Jeff Bordes on trumpet, Paul Everett on bass and Bob Tatum on drums, this is a band to be reckoned with. They thrive on the stage. They bring an energy so infectious it's hard to withstand. Go ahead and try. Before you know it, you'll find yourself laughing, moving and singing along. They aren't afraid to be real - to rip open their chest and bare all for the sake of the music. Each show is a roller coaster not to be missed.

Whether solo or with the band, Heather's bare-fisted approach to telling the stories that we all know by heart is electrifying. Come on, jump in, let your hair down and enjoy the ride...

This is my second purchase of this CD. The first one finally wore out! Heather's ability to put into song her raw emotions and perceptions and add to them her strong voice will hook you from the beginning. Can't be beat!

  • Buy 2 of this CD to start with-cuz someone's bound to "borrow it" from ya!

Once you hear Heather and the band, you'll be hooked. Fave track: Kiss & Tell...if you're tryin to seduce someone, put this track on! Title track Feel Like Flying-another fave-this song makes me wanna "scream at the top of my lungs"! This whole CD will have you singing along by your second listen.

Every song is awesome! Love the references about San Francisco. The lyrics are beautiful in each track and seems like they reflect several of the artist's personal experiences. The music is fun too! Especially the fiddle in the Fall of Rome. Love this CD!

The only reason I did not give the CD five stars is because I like "to the good times" a little better. Check this one out, it has great music and speaks to me like she is actually talking for me. You'll feel almost naked and exposed listening to it!!

  • Heather Combs is THE artist in the bay area. No doubt about it...she is going to be a star. Get it now, and you'll be very glad you did. Her songs will bring out emotions in you that you didn't even know you had.

  • heather rocks!

This is the best HCB CD so far. They just get better & better. Fall of Rome could be an anthem of sorts. Heather's songwriting has grown, matured and will take her farther than the "bar" band status HCB has in the Bay area right now!

  • Rad album!

Feel Like Flying is the best of the Heather Comb's Band albums. The songs are well written and many people can relate to the words and the passion in the music. Check out "Hold Me Now" and "The Fall of Rome."
