notes

Cold September is really not as new as you might think. If you really want to take it back to its roots, the whole thing started when Matt and Mike were in third grade. Matt played drums, and Mike played electric bass, and for a while they jammed in Matt's basement. They even made a tape of "Louie, Louie." Right away they wanted to start a band.

It didn't happen right away. After all, they were only third graders. But, five years later, the urge to start that band returned. Now eigth graders, the two friends started writing songs and making tapes again. The only difference was that now they played guitars instead of drums and bass. So, when they started getting serious about the music it was time to go out and recruit what was missing--a drummer and a bass player (at the time, Matt was the singer.) It didn't turn out to be that difficult. Adam, another friend from school, volunteered to play bass for us. One day, out of the blue, Matt was talking to a buddy Quyen at school. I believe it went something like this:

Matt: "Man, my band really needs a drummer."

Quyen: "oh."

Matt: "Do you play drums?"

Quyen: "yeah."

Matt: "Do you want to be in our band?"

Quyen: "Sure."

Matt: "Awesome!"

So now we had a full band. What next? A name. After going through months of names which are too terrible to list here, they settled on Benevolence. That stuck for a while, but then a death metal band from texas with the same name threatened to sue us. So, while listening to "Great Romances of the Twentieth Century" by Taking Back Sunday, Quyen thought of Cold September. Hooray!

Sometime that year it became apparent that, in order to be successful, we might want to consider finding a fifth member to sing lead vocals. Enter Phill. Boy were they stoked when Phill joined--he could croon like a bird. Haha. Ahem, anyway, Phill sounded great, so everything was going really well and the band wanted to step up to the plate and get even more serious. They wanted to start practicing 5 or 6 days per week. However, Quyen was in sports and couldn't fit this into his schedule. It was the toughest thing ever, but the band and Quyen parted, and they began practicing every day after school. Within a few weeks, Matt was browsing through people on Myspace and by pure chance clicked on Dave's profile. He saw that Dave played drums, and the rest is history. It turned out that Dave and Matt had played baseball together in elementary school. Crazy!

Ever since then the band has been progressing steadily. Over the spring and summer of 2005 the band played shows all around the state and recorded a 7-song demo with Andy Jenkins (a super cool dude). In April 2006 Cold September recorded an 8 song EP at The Basement Studio in Vancouver, WA, followed by a spring and summer full of shows around the state to promote the cd. After selling out of the first shipment the band has taken a new turn. Focusing their time on writing newer, edgier, technical, and envigorating sounds, will record a full lenght album, again with Andy Jenkins, due out mid-2007.
