notes
The latest release from pedal steel man, Jim Cohen. Once again, Jim ventures into new territory, selecting great classics from wide-ranging genres, and reinterpreting them in a fresh, modern-sounding way with the unique voice of the steel guitar.
Selections include five bebop-oriented jazz classics, "Tenor Madness", "Yardbird Suite", "Au Privave", "Cherokee", and "Four", in which Jim's steel guitar spins bebop lines usually associated only with horns, piano, and the like.
The disc also includes several great country-pop and classic rock tunes, such as the two Linda Ronstadt hits, "Love Has No Pride" and "Different Drum", as well as a dynamite version of the great Moody Blues hit, "Nights in White Satin" (which also includes a brief vocal by Jim).
Rounding out the disc are the tunes "Icarus", which is probably the best-known theme for the Paul Winter Consort, and the Brian Wilson/Beach Boys hit, "Surfer Girl", which Jim offers in a quiet, almost-prayerful treatment.
The CD features outstanding performances by producer/keyboardist Dan Kleiman, as well as Mike Landan (Bass), Neal Kidman (percussion), Mike Ihde (guitar), Chris Farr (tenor sax), John Swana (trumpet), Ken Ulansey (soprano sax), Jaji Hulting-Cohen (alto sax) and Beth Mead (banjo).
This CD will change the way you think about pedal steel guitar forever!
