Marcel Coenen - A Live Time Journey (DVD)
author: Mikolaj FurmankiewiczThe year 2006 presented us with second solo album by a Dutch magician of six strings at its beginning. Marcel came up with an idea of celebrating that event by organizing a party and recording it as a DVD material. The main part of "A Live Time Journey" makes up gig's record with Marcel Coenen and his friends in Weert on 28 January 2006. Most of tracks played on the stage that evening derive from "Colour Journey". Upon observing a musical "migration" of artists during the concert, I must admit that it made me think of a kaleidoscope's nature, haha. They take turns so often that it's hard to embrace intellectually, haha. I think that same instrumental kaleidoscope is Coenen's output. We can hear romantic ballads with female voices ("La Bella Mira", "Still Bleeding"), technical "acrobatics" ("The Shrink", "New Race"), key-guitar solos ("Waiting") and funky tunes ("The Skill Factor"). Marcel doesn't run away from the combination of different genres, e.g. "Abstract Impact" (a conoction of Fear Factory and Steve Vai) and vocally diversified "Traumatized To The Bone" (death growling, girls' vocal school in the style of Anneke van Giersbergen and Marcel's guitar parts in shredding tradition). Undoubtedly, the main character is Mr. Coenen, but I'd distinguish other three musicians as well: Rene Ubachs (Arabesque) and Frank Schiphorst (Symmetry) - both excellent as regards technically and a brilliant vocalist Paul Adrian Villareal of Sun Caged. In my opinion, that foursome best showed their instrumental skills and stage charisma. The club capacity isn't grand, so the atmosphere can be described as family indeed. Needless to say, there weren't any fireworks and additives of similar kind. Marcel's music is enough interesting and doesn't need additional "power". The only one thing I didn't like after watching DVD concerns technical side of the venture - concretely - takes. In my opinion, sometimes they were changed too often, bringing a chaos and not letting us fully focus our attention on instrumentalists' "actions". Although Marcel confessed to a few faults in performance, he didn't correct anything at the studio. Such a fidelity can be regarded as an advantage of DVD. It just goes to show that Marcel is honest towards all the fans. As far as the bonus material is concerned, its most interesting part turned out Marcel's performance within the confines of guitar clinics (March 2006, Bangkok, Thailand). Then he performed such tracks like "Race Against Time" (that was followed by one excerpt of Niccolo Paganini's composition), "La Bella Mira" and "Rebel" (strongly making me think of Symphony X). Apart from behind-the-scenes takes, here we can find two covers - "Still of the Night" and "Rooster". Even though I'd prefer original Coenen's music, the whole crew coped with hard rock classics very well. Since the moment of watching that material, Marcel will always make me think of a pleasant Dutch of Michael Romeo's dimensions and skills. Moreover, I will remember his output as an example of musical diversity, in which a listener can find progressive riffs' heaviness next to gentle and romantic playing. In other words, Marcel's DVD is another proof that virtuosity and emotions aren't the mutually exclusive elements!
