Album Notes

Code Pie is a six-piece rock band that began with a series of home recordings by singer Enzo Palermo in the year 2000. Two years later Palermo contacted guitarist Salvatore Ciolfi through an internet ad, and the two began writing and playing music together. Originally focused on a sort of post-rock influenced electronica, the duo were soon joined by drummer Vince Varano and bassist Michel Semienchuk, who gave the group a more muscular sound.

The additions of trumpet player Eva Boodman and cellist Rebecca Lessard completed the sextet, and the group promptly fell into a more immediate pop-rock sound based on their diverse musical preferences. Toying originally with the name "Three Wops, two Jews and a Ukranian", the band settled on Code Pie, an expression used by programmers, and began playing shows in and around Montreal and Toronto.

Their first album, This Habit, was recorded in late 2004 for only $700. Using rented equipment, the band put down tracks in various locations, including a high school auditorium, family homes, apartments and offices.

Wary of labels and unsure of how to proceed once the album was complete, Code Pie released This Habit on a label of their own creation. Flagless Records later signed a distribution deal with PHD Canada, a company based in Vancouver, British Colombia.

Supercalifragilistic

Aight Codepie, here's a quick rundown of your new album: Laundry list is a masterpiece. Gala is trippy pop fun. Little bamboo is your first single. Cement truck is Queen's next single and Rushin' has that ethereal quality that makes you wanna dance in your underwear. How enjoyable is this album! The first half is like I'm Tom Cruise on couches fun, the second half is much more brooding and introspective. In fact Watson, you'll notice this diametrical quality is also present in the music itself. The tracks are incredibly accessible, easy to listen to yet they eschew the conventional form (i.e. lack of recurring choruses) lending the album a delectable unpredictability. But enough of me speaking like I actually hold any diplomas.... ahem. This is great stuff, genuinely great.

The CD is amazing from start to finish! CodePie's sound is both powerful and original. My personal favorites on this debut album are "Little Bamboo" and "Laundry List". I'm really looking forward to their next album :)

This Habit became my habit

A little Foo Fighters, a little Apostle of Hustle, and a lot of "background orchestra". This album really rocks my playlist, and makes you wait for an europe tour... Especially songs like Little Bamboo, Laundry List and Rushin' make this album sound different than other ordinary garage bands - and by different I mean great. Thumbs up for the canadians.
