notes
This debut release by Cocktail Angst was recorded shortly after the band formed in Brooklyn, NY in 1997.
Cocktail Angst experiments with Latin rhythms, Mancini-inspired 60's film music, a shared hatred of parades and hours of maniacal laughter to produce their unique sound. Toby Williams's golden-throat vocals provide an ethereal contrast to themes such as stalking, kidnapping and love gone muy loco psycho. They made this first record after riding the Cyclone at Coney Island ten times in a row. Cocktail Angst is both a libation and a CD.

The members of Cocktail Angst are five New York based jazz musicians with keen wits and a shared hankering for hi-jinks and good, fun music. Tom Beckham (Gunther Schuller, Dave's True Story, Bloomdaddies, David Locke) plays the vibes and writes songs. Jon Dryden (David Byrne, Marcus Miller, Paula Cole, Michal Urbaniak) is the main songwriter and plays piano and keyboards. John Mettam (Drazy Hoops, Golem, Goats in Trees) is a cocktail drum extraordinaire! Stephan Crump (Jen Chapin, Sonny Fortune, Bobby Previte) grounds the band on acoustic bass. Toby Williams (vocals, percussion, lyrics) performs with her own jazz trio and quartet. She is pursuing her masters degree in music therapy and teaches voice to adults and music and movement to little kids in Brooklyn, New York. Toby and Jon grew up together in Santa Cruz, California and their music is indirectly influenced by the beach, The Boardwalk amusement park, the scary and beautiful redwoods and The Mystery Spot.

Worth My Trip
author: Cecil Chilo VaraI came across this CD while at the Virgin Records in Times Square. Brought it back home to Indianapolis and I love it. After listening to the songs, I found myself being ecstatically theirs. What a tremendous voice and compilation of rhythm, American Idol have got nothing on Cocktail Angst...they're in a league of their own!
