notes
Chris Minh Doky is a prominent jazz bassist who has released several acclaimed albums. This New York-based artist is considered a master of the upright bass, and is recognized for his passionate delivery and exceptional skill. Doky carries on the distinct Danish bass tradition of the acoustic bass being a lead instrument. Doky’s ability to perform with equal creativity as both a solo artist and sideman has put him on the list of Top 10 Bassists of Reader’s Polls and earned him Artist Of The Year awards. In addition to leading his own band, Doky continues to play with such renowned jazz musicians as Randy Brecker and Mike Stern.
Doky released his Minh album in 1998, following two albums he recorded with the Doky Brothers. He recruited an all-star cast of musicians to join him on this excellent album. Minh features such prestigious musicians as David Sanborn (sax), Michael Brecker (sax), Randy Brecker (trumpet), Mike Stern and David Gilmore (guitars), Lenny White and Paul Peterson (drums), Ricky Peterson and Joey Calderazzo (keyboards). In addition, the album features guest vocal performances by Lalah Hathaway and Dianne Reeves, among others.
This album contains a fine mix of classic hit songs uniquely performed by Doky, including Sting’s “Every Breath You Take” and Gino Vannelli’s “I Just Wanna Stop (written by Ross Vannelli), plus several new compositions written by Doky, such as “I Told You So,” “Waiting On You,” “Sleepless Dream,” “A New Day” and “It Once Was.”
