notes
Clawjob's SPACE CRACKERS is an epic sci-fi rock opera of incalculable ingenuity and daring!
Join Clawjob on a pleasantly rocktastic journey into a future so bleak, so dismal... yet... so POPPY!!! SO MELODIC!!! SO GLORIOUS!!! So about-to-be-digested-by-ravenous-aliens!!!
Wait a minute, what?! Tell me more!!!
SPACE CRACKERS covers a wide range of sonic territory, from the majestic pomp of "Welcome to Space School" to the bouncy Brit-Pop hooks of "I Got My Space Pass," from the unhinged indie SPLAT of "Zero Gravity" to the ferocious speed metal of "Dooks of Doom Part III." The album is topped off by the schizophrenic 20-minute-long title track, a mini-opera inits own right.
BUT WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
In the golden era following Earth's peaceful political unification, two students from the renowned Space School - salutatorian Julian and his secret love, valedictorian Madeleine - are to be sent on a scientific mission intended to improve life for all planetary inhabitants: the space-based research and development of a 100% synthetic food source for the overpopulated Earth. But when Julian breaks his toe before the thirty-week-long mission starts, the only available replacement is Greg, a sub-par student whose infatuation with Madeleine is matched only by his ignorance of her romance with Julian. Greg is thrilled - Julian is not. Soon, however, Julian's fear of being cuckolded is overshadowed by a fear of being VIOLENTLY DEVOURED, as his trusty Radartron detects an incoming spaceship full of voracious aliens. While Madeleine struggles to complete the mission, Greg pursues his elusive love, and Julian takes leadership of the Earth's defense squad. Things aren't looking too good for the human race!

Gnarly!
author: Smother.netI can just picture it now, a bunch of Ritz’s floating about outer space; or a bunch of hillbillies. Well regardless this rock opera from Boston-based Clawjob shows us their initial angle of jangly pop riffs and boisterous vocals. Then they allow us to claw inside their innards of distorted guitar bliss as we follow the story of two students from Space School who are sent on a scientific mission to improve life for all planetary inhabitants by finding a synthetic food source for the swelling planet’s population. Intriguing storyline that one day might not be far from the truth. Gnarly!
Love it.
author: 75 or LessBefore today, I had listened to two kinds of operas: the Mr. Rogers kind, with warbling puppets, and the traditional kind, with screeching sopranos. Clawjob's version kicks both of their asses! Space Crackers is an epic tale of unrequited love, research at a space station, and the eradication of humankind by the Dooks of Doom. Supporting clever lyrics, the music runs the gamut of styles, from a Queen-y intro to straight indie rock to dissonant metal. The chorus of "I Got My Space Pass!" channels Superchunk, and "Probabilities" has a Pixies/Veruca Salt thing going on. Love it. - meredith
Catchy, trippy, rockin.
author: DerekA science fiction rock opera. How could you possibly resist? If you find a way, don't bother. This is a solid collection of songs spanning many genres with a cast of thousands. I Got My Space Pass will worm its way into your brain and force you to sing along. Lovely packaging too.
