notes

Clatter is a two-piece rock band from central Missouri. Amy Humphrey (bass and vocals) and Joe Hayes (drums and percussion) blend rhythmic mayhem with melodic melodies to create rock music without guitars.

Their CD "Blinded By Vision" has been receiving rave reviews everywhere! Clatter toured 50,000 miles across the US and Canada to support the release, culminating in a concert in Boonville, MO that was filmed for their DVD release "Blinded in Boonville" (available at www.clatter.com). The DVD got great reviews in both "Bass Player" and "Bass Guitar" magazines.

Clatter currently is at work on a new album sheduled for release later this year.

Simon Rose, DJ at KBXR, says:

"I'm a sucker for great songs, great riffs, great tunes. You get them all on Clatter's "Blinded by Vision". Love the unconventional instrumentation as well on this record. This is a great album, one of my favorites of the year."

Here's what "Amplifier Magazine" had to say about "Blinded By Vision":

"Weary of over-hyped guitar bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the White Stripes? Clatter eliminates guitar clutter altogether with a line-up consisting solely of bassist Amy Humphrey and drummer Joe Hayes. Employing a myriad of mind-altering effects most closely associated with the various permutations of very heavy metal (distortion, flange, delay) Humphrey emerges as polyrhythmic pyrotechnic by slapping, riffing and soloing in the grand tradition of Larry Graham (Sly & the Family Stone), Les Claypool (Primus) and Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath). Hayes is no slouch either, gamely grooving with tasty fills and inventive call-and-response phrasing.  . . . The standout track on this collection is "Center Line," which adheres to a simple funk motif and eventually simmers with sultry spoken-word vignettes . . . this is a fine audio library for aspiring hard-rock bassists and prog aficionados."

  • Who needs guitars?

    'Nuff said. :-)

  • Fascinating!
    author: Oliver Zahorka

Beautiful and powerful music. Amazing how two musicians can come up with such rich a texture sounding like a whole band.

  • Clatter in a math and color formula
    author: Ian Perge

How to explain Clatter as a mathematical equation? Multiple layers of clean, distorted, and effected bass + blue-haired acoustic and electronic drums and percussion + pink-haired vocals = tasty goodness. The combination of Amy Humphrey's split-signal bass and vocals ranging from powerful to soft and everywhere in-between to Joe Hayes' technically dazzling acoustic drumming and triggered samples and percussion (shades of Peart indeed) make this duo sound far bigger than they've any right to be, and the fact that they also write great songs to boot is the proverbial cherry on the top of a very delicious musical cake.

  • This cd really rocks
    author: Steph Hagedorn

I really love this cd. I had a copy before but I carried it all over and the center of the disc cracked so I needed to buy another. The blend of the bass and drums is so perfect. I never thought a bass and drums were capable of so much incredible sounding music because usually the guitars are the focas of the band. I have bought this disc for everyone I know because I have such an appreciation for the music. It is very powerful and a very full sound.

  • Who needs guitars anyway?
    author: Conrad

I've known about Clatter for a long time, and finally picked up the CD. I already had the DVD and knew they could play, hearing it in a studio context with the extra polishing doesn't let it loose the edge. Technique-wise, Joe is as tight as Neil Peart, no crap! He adds more styles into the music, which goes well with many of Amy's licks. It might take a while to realize that its ALL BASS! Amy also shows her knowledge of Russian. And her singing is excellent. A modern-day rock singer girl who doesn't whine or screech, but can actually sing. Very good stuff.

  • This CD rocks!!!!
    author: el_duderino

I was a little skeptical when I first heard of the idea of a two-piece band, but after I watched Clatter's DVD (Blinded in Boonville) I realized that they are a rockin little band, so I just had to pick this album up.

  • killer CD (and DVD too) amy and joe!
    author: Jackie Sampsel

check out my short review over at UBP! but killer CD guys and i can't wait for another (newer or older). you WON'T be disappointed. amy has a very tasteful use of effects on both simple and complex grooves on the bass. awesome vocals and joe is one bad a$$ drummer.

  • This Band ROCKS SEVERELY!!
    author: toemoss in Oregon

This is an incredible CD - being a bass player for many years, it was a brainshock to hear the incredible bass lines that also supplied pseudo-guitar. The songs are hard rock with some lilting interludes, Amy's vocals are Celtic and alluring, and the drummer is tighter than just about any I've heard. BUY THE CD!! I'm going to buy some for friends as presents!!

  • Totally Kicks ASS
    author: Headle from uglybassplayer.com

This CD is killer Amy is a phenomenal Bass player and all Bassists should be so lucky to play with a drummer as killer as Joe. This CD kicked my ass from beginning to end and I can't wait for the next.

  • School presentation was a hit!!!!!!!!
    author: Ruby Moon-Houldson

My son bugged me for months to get this CD for him. Clatter came to my son's school and performed for all the kids. My son came home having fits to get the CD. So I finally got it for him. It came in time for Christmas. He was overjoyed to say the least. He's hoping that Clatter will come back and perform again one day soon. The music is great. Thanks.

  • ROCK! ROCK! ROCK!
    author: James

One of the heaviest, rockingest, and most creative albums I've heard in quite some time. It's hard to believe this sonic assault comes from just two musicians, especially since there's no guitar. This group does not disappoint!

  • awesome awesome awesome!
    author: james

this cd is exactly what im after in music - a remedy for all throw away emo and pop punk - the grunge-esque style kicked my ass on the first listening and wooed it on the second - i hope any follow up will be as good as this!

  • I want more!!!!
    author: cheezberger

Power trios have always done it for me but who knew a duo could rock like this! Fresh, inventive, intriguing... where's my thesaurus!! This is the best new music I've heard in years... I'll be anxiously awaiting the next CD from this band.

  • Good bass player and Drummer.
    author: Tom Leo

I liked this CD. Very interesting being that there are only 2 members. Good bass player and Drummer. Worth checking out.

  • EXCELLENT!!!!!
    author: Cheezewiz

This is simply a fabulous CD. Amy's bass playing is top notch and Joe's drumming is equally impressive. The songs are hard, hookfilled, and anything but boring. I haven't been this excited about a new band since King's X came out 20 years ago.

  • Two people, Mucho music
    author: Captain Freedom

I've been a Bassist for many years, One of my fav experiences was when it was just me & My drummer. And for a long time it was just us two, and people dug it. So when i heard clatter i was totally pumped that they took it,one step further with vocals. Clatter kicks ass with solid tastful drumming, and a pretty cute kick Ass Bassist..it's about time somebody released something that is "NOT" a dime a dozen album..nice job guys please give the world some more clatter.

  • Impressive.
    author: Wil

Very impressive stuff, and I am not easily impressed. I have been a bass player for most of my life, and a drummer for about half of it, I know talent, I know ability, and I know good songs. This album has all three, this is some good shit.

  • The best CD I have heard in years!
    author: andy

Heavy riffs, great vocals and great playing. I have never heard a band like Clatter and if you like great riffs and excellent bass and drumming buy this CD today, you will not be disapointed.

  • Pissed off
    author: GDL

This is really good stuff. It's incredible to hear a bassist who can sing over a bass line in the first place, but here it's mind-boggling: the bass is badass, holding up everything - bottom, melody, rythm AND she's signing counterpoint. Holy trout mask, Batman! My only complaint - she's singing some pissed-off songs, but doesn't sound pissed off. Maybe it's the bass that's doing the pissed off part.

  • Geddy only wishes he could Clatter!!!!
    author: blueyedmule

This is one tight album. I was struck by the sheer weight and dynamic synergy created by two people who know each other so well personally and musically. One flows into another, and the result is Blinded by Vision, a searing and grinding piece of musical construct wielded in a manner neither surgical, nor sterile, but rather with a combination of the effect of a first electric kiss and a sharp body blow. Sit down, strap in, turn it up and hang on. Geddy only wishes he could Clatter!

  • Killer Bass!All around goodness!
    author: Rand262

Hard to believe this is a 2 piece band.Haunting vocals coupled with outstanding musicianship. You cant go wrong with this cd.Clatter rocks.

  • Great x(Drums+Bass+Vocals)= AMAZING!
    author: Johnny Crab

BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT!! MUST HAVE CD if you are a drummer, bass player/lover, OR are bored with your current CD's! Played LOUD and you get motivated to move. Best production of drums, vocals, and bass I've ever heard AND it captures the SOUND of LIVE bass and drums like no other. BEST CD/music I've ever bought(Bin Buyin' since 1960 ok?). Yes, I have bass guitars.

  • Heavy Groove with hot vocal work!
    author: tonebender

I really didn't know what to expect from just bass and drums, but man what a groove! The mix on this CD is great, Amy's stoney melodic vocals and vicious bass lines are a perfect match for Joe's pounding beats. You won't be disappointed with Clatter's "Blinded by Vision".

  • Woah! Radically Kick-Ass-tic!
    author: bholder

Ok, so as a bass player, I'm biased, but Clatter ROCKS! Churning melodic metal funk riffs with great female vocals and harmonies, intelligible and intelligent lyrics, at times emotionally frank and personal, and that beautiful voice! These two kick maximum ass!

  • Cracking stuff
    author: oddity_uk

This album makes me want to get up and play the shit out of my bass, the intro to Left Out if particularly stunning. A lot of very good songs on here, it's nice to hear a band that really knows how to groove and rock out instead of the usualy shoe-gazing melancholy indie crap. Good stuff :)

  • Rockin!
    author: Krafty

Wow, great CD. Bass players are turly gods among gods. The Cd is original, well done, and full of some really great music. The melodies are great, and it'll have you turn up your radio and rocking out all day.

  • Nice
    author: Rowka

Bass and Drum on a new level. Real rock music for real people. It's amazing how much landscape can be painted with such vibrancy, alchemy and viscosity without becoming eutectic or indisposed.

  • One of the best CDs I've ever bought
    author: Tom Speight

Clatter have produced a CD brimming with great, very distinctive, and haunting songs. No guitars, songs in foreign languages, you name it... this is very creatives tuff. 'Nevsky Prospekt' is one of the best songs I've ever heard. The bass playing is amazing, and the drumming is simply jaw-dropping. As far as creativity goes, this CD is very hard to beat, and not only that, it's GOOD too! I must admit, I wish any band I was in could put out a record this good. These ain't your dad's Beach Boys songs.

  • Didn't miss guitars
    author: greenboy

This is one bass/drums group that manages to sound powerful, stimulating and textured without guitar or synth overdubs. They also sound like they could storm a club that's home to sweat and shredding. Amy Humphrey's vocal delivery flies stark and modern while she plays bass lines through both bass and gutar rigs. There's impact and dexterity there that should embarrass enough metal d00ds to become accountants. Meanwhile, Joe Hayes summons enough energy on an extended drum kit to make Kali seem ambulatory, occasionally triggering samples that act as mileposts along the compositional highway. This is my fave two-piece rock group recording of the past few years. It's all the more remarkable that they sound this developed live. Or so I hear...

  • Music with a bite to it!
    author: Low Tone

The songs on this CD are some of the best music I've heard in years. Dark Karma esecially catches my attention and the drive behind all the songs is intense and powerful. It amazes me that just two people could make such a large sound with their music and it is a sound destined to make a difference.

  • Man, this is a killer great CD
    author: Meegaleedo

I just love this CD. I can not say enough about it. It is hard to believe this is just two people. Not a bad song on this disk. I am particularly enamored of Center Line and Black Karma. Good driving passionate rock and roll. If tou like your music with thunder and power, grab this CD, drop in in your player and CRANK THIS MUTHA!

  • Can a girl bassist rock?
    author: Brad

What can I say, I love bass. If you have doubts whether a girl bassist can rock you better check this out - this is GOOD stuff! Bassist Amy Humphrey and husband drummer Joe Hayes put down solid grooves and intricate rhythms in this two-piece release that will open your eyes to the possibilities of heavy rock sans typical instrumentation with guitars and/or keys. Creative multi effects and solid playing characterize Amy's bass playing on the premier center-stage bass - a Rickenbacker 4003 - with which she produces a wall of sound that should make guitarists everywhere feel insecure. Joe's musical percussion solidifies the songs and Amy's vocal is clear and honest, with her nicely layered backing vocals perfecting the tunes with catchy harmonies. Their chemistry is evident, and vibrant. It's a daring and fresh approach that pushes the boundaries of the expected norms of a rock band, and I think if you're intrigued, you're likely to love it.

  • Unique Bass Rock....BUY IT!
    author: Jon

I like to think that I a very broad taste in music; no genre is taboo to me and i mix freely. However, I still can't find a way to categorize Clatter. I think that's a darn good thing too. I can only describe their style of music as original and terrific. It's heavy, but still extremely melodic and catchy. It's powerful, but still sensitive. It's thundering bass coupled with angelic vocals. An incredible music experience, to be sure. There's really not a whole lot else to say about Clatter, other than this: Buy this CD! You won't regret it.

  • author: MBIYF

    Great album. Go Girl!

  • Real music for a change
    author: Jesse

It's real music, straight ahead rock with an experimental edge. Amy's vocals grab you right from the opening lines of Just Like You and keep hold all the way through the entire CD. The multiple layers of effected and clean bass guitar create a really interesting overall feeling, and the use of multiple types of percussion to match make this a very pleasurable listen. It's not for everyone, but everyone should at least give it a try.
