notes

Circe Link's new record One Drop of Poison is a cohesive blend between her first recording More Songs, an innocent low-fi often bare bones production, and Let's Go Together he second release a slicker more detail oriented endeavor. One Drop of Poison has the organic appeal of rich and warm acoustic guitars, the ever present upright bass, an unusual addition of clavinet, smoking violins and the spell casting voice of the artist herself, while appealing to a standard of sonic skill and songwriting rarely seen but more than appreciated by all who have had the pleasure.

Circe Link and her multi-talented group have accomplished what few artists aspire to and fewer still achieve: a magnificent rendering of hybrid roots music in a thoroughly modern delivery with irresistible emotion. Circe possesses the kind of control/delivery that only experienced jazz vocalists can offer while couching it in campy, clever and emotionally appealing lyrics amid stunningly lucid arrangements replete with fiddle, upright bass, steel guitar, brushed drums, etc... The relaxed southern mood is deceptively sophisticated and is sure to endear lovers of country, pop, jazz, rockabilly, western swing - broad and powerful appeal. Not since Patsy Cline have I heard one artist so effortlessly capture more diverse influences and synthesize them so winningly. This is timeless Americana that transcends categorization and should be heard on radios throughout the country now.

Well, she calls it cowboy jazz. But take any combination of the following adjectives and shake them together in a kaleidoscope of color: early jazz, country western, female folk pop, contemporary country, and influences from Norah Jones to soft Bonnie Raitt to Lucinda Williams to Alison Krauss and you're beginning to get there. While each track has a personality and progression of its own, as a whole, "One Drop of Poison" holds together beautifully wowing just about any set of ears it falls upon.
