notes
In 1978 Christian was one of the youngest students to graduate with a First Prize from the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique (or Paris conservatory). He later studied at Boston's Berklee College of Music. "I'd say the first thing that shocked me when I arrived was that I discovered I wasn't bad," he laughs. "I began to concentrate 100 percent on jazz, on improvising and building it slowly into something personal."
Christian toured with one of his mentors at Berklee, Gary Burton, for two years. He then joined ebullient big-sound trumpeter Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau Band. He's spent much of the 90s writing and arranging for Ferguson and it was this association that brought about his two CDs for Concord Records "Maynard Ferguson Presents Christian Jacob", and "Time Lines".
Christian's ten year collaboration with Telarc vocalist Tierney Sutton is taking on a life of its own, with the release of their latest recording together "Dancing in the Dark" the band has begun touring nation wide. Christian orchestrated and conducted the string orchestra that enriches the texture on five of the 12 tracks.
Christian's main focus at present is his new trio CD "Styne & Mine" with Trey Henry and Ray Brinker. The recording is a mix of Christian's originals and the music of Jule Styne. Tierney Sutton sings beautifully on two of the tracks.
Besides working with Tierney Sutton I would say that "Styne & Mine" is my main project. It is my first attempt at releasing my own CD and it's is turning out to be a fantastic ride. For a complete touring schedule go to www.christianjacob.com

"Descriptive words such as virtuoso and genius are not words I easily throw around. When I first heard Christian Jacob I knew he was something special... I believe that Christian Jacob is about to become a major force in jazz today!"
~Maynard Ferguson
Christian's taste and touch are impeccable.
Jule Styne would love this CD and so will you.
~Alan and Marilyn Bergman
"A post-bop modernist touched by the souls of Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett...Pianist Christian Jacob is a wonderful player whose crystalline melodies and expansive harmonies mark him as someone to keep an ear on."
~Jazz Times
"I've heard and played with many pianists over many years, including some of the great ones, so that it would take one with exceptional talent to cause my ears to "stand up." Christian has done just that with this CD. It is rewarding and quite fulfilling to hear someone of his talent, and the unique ability to extemporaneously bring things to life."
This is real jazz at its finest.
You owe it to yourself to listen to this man.

Styne and Mine
author: Ronald ArsenaultSuperb Pianist ! A rare find, Brilliant performance also with Tierney Sutton
More brillance from Christian Jacob.
author: Helen InglisAnother brilliant performance by Christian Jacob. Delicious and exciting! A joy to hear this talented trio working so beautifully together.
A cornerstone for the future of Jazz
author: Ashley DavenportIn fifty years, we will look back on this generation and when we talk about the "Jazz Greats" who really impacted the art form and the music, the name Christian Jacob will most certainly be well noted. I became addicted to his style through the soulful artistry of Tierney Sutton, who makes an appearance on this CD. Listening to her I found I kept being sucked in by the genius accompanying her on the piano. I had to have this CD and I assure you, if you like good Jazz and you love to hear a good Jazz pianist, this is a excellent purchase. This CD will go down in the annals of Jazz history and Christian Jacobs will, I know, continue to bring us his artistry and talent only superceding what he has already accomplished.
Creative, brilliant, original - in the best Keith Jarrett/Mulgrew Miller/Brad Me
author: Peter IngramWhat a pleasure to listen to such a well recorded talented artist together with his equally talented partners. They truly think alike musically - a sure sign of a great trio. And they swing! My only slight peeve is that I felt the the drums were too overpowering (busy) during some of the piano solos, at times to the point of distraction; but being a drummer....I understand!!
Simply Brilliant
author: Amelia WilliamsWhat an uplifting blast of brilliance from the fingertips to the touch of a piano key to the sound resounding through our beings. Brilliant, smooth, amazing, incredible are only a few words demanded after hearing such an experience - Christian your touch, Trey's smoothness, the warmth of Ray through his soul moving rhythm and complimented by Tierney leads to an escape worthy of nothing but praise. I have driven 2 hours from home to see you perform twice, I'll do it again any time you are in NY. Congrats on your success... you are an inspiration.
Wonderful!
author: Stephanie SchuelerMy favorite cut is 'Just In Time' - it is very infectious.
Mr. Jacobs is a very talented pianist.
author: Tom KeatingThis is a must-have CD.I hope Mr.Jacobs performs music by other great composers in the future.(I think his accmppaniement to Tierney Sutton on EARLY AUTUMN was exceptional.)
Great trio playing wondeful arrangements!
author: Art AlenikI've long been impressed by Mr. Jacob's trio as they accompanied Tierney Sutton. This CD is simply wonderful. The arrangements are all very inventive (including an absolutely unique take on 'Never Never Land'), and Mr. Jacob & co. can flat out play!
I wonder, after hearing Christian play, why I even bother to play the piano.
author: Seamus McCormackI have been playing Jazz for about 40 years and after hearing the incredible playing of Christian Jacob, I wonder why I even try. The man sounds like he has seven fingers on each hand. What blows my mind the most are his arrangements. I cannot even begin to imagine what goes through his mind with the arrangement of People for example. Absolute genius!!!
Outstanding
author: DickCan only hope this is the beginning of a spate of Christian Jacob recordings. Though he has incredible technique, he never lets it out of his control, i.e., the music is what matters. And what a job he does with the music. Elegant and impeccable in every respect.
Elegant musicianship
author: HalThis is a masterful disc from a phenomenal group of musicians. Christian Jacob's playing is elegant -- never too many notes, never too few. His arranging of Styne tunes is engaging, as are his own works. Show your support for great jazz musicians and buy this disc.

This CD is the best I've heard. The trio and Tierney are great and this CD should be at the top of the charts. The musicians are the greatest.I'd recommend this CD to everyone who loves Jazz.
- author: Helen Hoffpauir
This is one of the best CDs I've heard in a long time. The arrangements are the draw - all very innovative, original and fresh, and the execution could not be tighter. I saw this group with Tierney Sutton in D.C., who performs flawlessly as usual on this recording. Consummate jazz players. I'll give this as gifts this year!
Jule Styne would be most proud of this collection.
author: Robert J. RobbinsPianist Christian Jacob, who incidentally is the son-in-law of Maynard Ferguson (for whose Big Bop Nouveau Band he played and arranged some fifteen years ago), offers up first-class, contemporary interpretations of the music of one of the twentieth century's supreme composers of popular, Broadway, and Hollywood songs, in addition to several of his own Bill Evans-inspired compositions. Jule Styne, whose centenary will be celebrated at the end of next year, would be most proud of this collection.
Power Quartet DAZZLES
author: Mark LawThis disk has staying power; it will stay in your player and not get old. If you have a chance to see Christian perform live, you will learn that not only is he a monster player, but a delightful person as well. This group works so well together, the interplay is hypnotic. If you ever give music as a gift, this should be at the top of your list. Even the un-jazzed will live this one. Christian’s performance is dazzling. Tierney Sutton adds just the right spice to the project. If you want more, you are in luck; each of Christian’s disks is a treat. This same trio backs up Tierney on her five releases. The four of them have played together for 10+ years, and it shows.

Styne & Mine confirms what the Tierney Sutton CDs demonstrated - that Christian Jacob will one day be considered among the most important musicians of the era. I particularly liked his Three Pieces. Outstanding album! Paul Kneipp
Without a doubt the best CD I've heard in a long time!
author: Gil LesterChristian, without a doubt the best CD I have heard in a long time. The balance between instruments is great! Selection of tunes, great! Musicianship is superb!! When I first saw the lineup of tunes I wondered about "People" only because I'm not very fond of Streisand. Once I heard what you did with it, without question the nicest arrangement I have heard. Love the changes you used. You are playing better and better all the time. What a great talent you are blessed with. I also love the range you have Tierney singing in, that would be my choice for her also. Of course when music lovers get hold of gems like this they want more! Hope you have enough success with this CD that you can keep your admirers content.
