Chris Ryan writes songs that sound like a punked-up version of Led Zeppelin.
He is the workingman's Ryan Adams.

Imagine early Van Halen by way of the Bowery.

Live, he and his band turn out a heartfelt, high-energy show. "I always try to make the live show better than the last time you saw us," says Ryan. In fact, L Magazine has called him and his band the "anti-New York City rock and roll band."

His best friend of 12 years, Nick Ferrante, plays drums. The two spent their high school years together listening to funk and soul records and jamming in Nick's basement. They have played together ever since.

Earlier this year, legendary producer/engineer David Bianco (Frank Black, Mick Jagger, D Generation) heard some tracks Ryan had recorded in his bedroom in 2003. Bianco offered to produce an official debut, so Ryan and Ferrante flew out to LA to record an EP. They got Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello) to play bass and Lyle Workman (Beck) to play lead guitar. The resulting "Blackout Money" is a portrait of tasteful hard rock.

The album is a classic update on a lost sound. Recorded live to tape with very little overdubbing, it's a raw and driving debut that sounds at times like Dave Grohl and Cheap Trick on a double date and other times like Oasis and Queens of the Stone Age snorting cocaine off a stripper's ass. In short, the 6 songs that make up "Blackout Money" are a ferocious example of what Chris Ryan is capable of.

Ryan's secret weapon is his drummer Nick Ferrante. His sound is akin to the boulder in Indiana Jones that almost crushes everyone alive. He is the Jimmy Chamberlin to Ryan's Billy Corgan. Live, the band is rounded out by Jeff Allen on bass and Zak Soulam on lead guitar.

Ryan is also a producer. He has written music for award-winning indie films and television shows such as Sex and the City and Street Time.

After a particularly explosive show at The Continental in New York City this past winter, Chris Ryan was offered and accepted a residency there for June 2004- every Thursday at 9pm. The shows will be free.

  • massively constructed ..tunes about living hard, playing hard, loving hard.

If you're gonna get an indie rock n roll disc this year, this is the one to get! Chris Ryan's breakout single "East Coast Liner" made Chuck Eddy's (Village Voice) Best Singles of 2004 List and local rock radio station, Q-104.3FM, played the track "Deny It" on its "Out Of The Box" radio show (showcasing the best in new music and local undiscovered artists). On the whole, Blackout Money is true, gutsy rock -- massively constructed with rousing tunes about living hard, playing hard, loving hard, and falling hard when love fails. Each track has powerful drumming and an all out tough as nails groove. It really is awesome!
