notes

Though I was born in central Illinois, I grew up in Colorado and then moved to LA. I now live in New York City with my wife, Amanda, two cats and a rabbit. A few years ago I began writing a new song weekly, which eventually led me to create the Song Diary. In 2003 the lyrics to my song “The Dustbowl” were chosen as the foreword for a collection of work inspired by the late Warren Zevon. In 2006 my song “Subway Singin’ Blues” was included in Volume 6 of the Ride The Train series, available from Newbraugh Brothers Records. Also in 2006, I was selected as an Artist In Residence by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Coucil. Some of the music I wrote during that period made it on to my debut album, Sangamon (2007).

  • Bare-Bones Brilliance
    author: Mark Walker

Chris Fuller's debut full-length album 'Sangamon' is an intimate and raw presentation of his songs, primarily focusing on his voice backed by acoustic guitar. Smartly placed compliments of harmonica, slide guitar, banjo, acordion, and bass appear from song to song. Ocean waves and cricket sounds are also woven in occasionally for atmospheric emphasis. The production of 'Sangamon' is very basic - not much in the way of added studio effects are found. This method is effective in bringing Fuller's voice front & center. You can practically picture him sitting right in front of you in your own room as he tells his stories through music. The dry production of the music is a perfect parallel to the stark and bare-bones existence of life on the great plains during the migratory period of the early 20th century which Chris Fuller draws upon for much of his subject matter. But Fuller's story telling style is not a romanticized depiction of these hard times. He gives a convincing account of the struggle and drawn out daily battle for survival exposing the darker side of human nature as exemplified in this passage from 'Midnight Fog': "Such hollow hopes run my opiate My saw-tooth trail of lies The miracle blossom that buried it With the truth of Rebecca's eyes Midnight fog, won't you help me Hide my wicked love Oh won't you melt away my guilt" Stylistically, 'Sangamon' exemplifies folk, country, and bluegrass, with a touch of rock & roll on occasion. Fuller's vocal delivery covers a great range of styles - reminiscent of Donovan in tonal quality, and exudes the delicate and intimate quality of Nick Drake very nicely balanced with the sinister and cynical delivery of Roger Waters. Influences such as Hank Williams and Bob Dylan echo through on this album, as one would expect given the historical references and unforgiving account of American politics in his song: 'Get A Room.' "Church and State, just get a room If you can't separate, well then - just get a room! Janglin' pockets bangin' in court Read upon freedom in the coroner's report..." 'Sangamon' is a great collection of Chris Fuller's tunes produced in a timeless style that resonate well within the context of pretty much any time period as it concerns American roots music. He's got many more songs that he's not formally released yet, so be sure to check out his official website for a glimpse of much more to come.

  • Unusual
    author: frank mazzetti

This Fuller guy has his own way of looking at the world, like "church and state get a room," so you won't suffer any worn out rehashing of themes or word play. Because he's unusual you might have to work with the songs a little, but I assure you the labor will be worth it.

  • Excellent Album

Intricately crafted songs to listen to again and again. Very honest and genuine songwriting. Buy this cd! I did, and now I'm happy.

  • New and not strange
    author: J. Erwin

It was refreshing to stumble across this new but not strange sound. Thanks.

  • Love it all. My favorite is Keep My Secret.
    author: Marian F.

There's a little bit of everything in this albutm. If you're from the Midwest you'll identify with Sangamon. If you're a music officionato you'll love the musical nuances this guy creates with his word-songs. Chris' tone is as fresh and whispy as a summer breeze that'll haunt you throughout the coldest winter nights. Waytago, Fuller!

  • Sangamon features brilliant storytelling, lush compositions, and crisp vocals.
    author: MamaRobot

The songs on Sangamon emulate the material of most authentic singer/songwriters I've heard, and yet are so original, there is not a cliche to be found. What you will hear are masterful compositions featuring guitar, harmonica, ukelele, accordion, violin, and even wine glasses. The result is an incredubly lush and well-produced sound. The haunting Widowmaker Creek is especially good.
