notes

Jenny Choi began her journey in singer-songwriting as a student in Champaign, IL -- the mecca of indie rock.  There, Choi forged for herself an impressive following through her sincere performances and quirky, charming banter, attracting press from CMJ and attention from major labels.  However, Choi moved back to her hometown Chicago to stay true to her DIY ethics and passion for cultivating innovative songwriting, turning down offers from various corporate powers and a chance to pursue a hackneyed popstar career.

Moreover, Choi founded and coordinated the Asians In Indie Rock (AIR) tour (August 2003), featuring over fifteen bands for a 17-city tour across the Midwest, East and West Coasts.  The tour featured bands such as From Monument To Masses (Dim Mak), Julie Plug, Suntan (Kimchee), and Short Round (Asian Man Records).  AIR also hosted a special date in conjunction with the 9th annual Chicago Asian American Film Festival showcase, featuring the venerable and beloved NYC indie icons Versus, MirrorAmerica (John Lee of aMiniature/Seam), Scrabbel, and herself.

In addition, she was also invited to play at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel for the Korean Centennial Closing Gala in NYC, along the likes of ABC anchor Juju Chang and political activist Angela Oh.

For the second annual AIR tour, Choi will be playing under the new name Sanawon as a two-piece (organ and drums) with Mike Park of Asian Man Records. Highlights of this tour include Ida, the Beatnik Termites, Aden, Whysall Lane (ex-Versus, Jawbreaker), and many others.

It was great music. I like the lyrics, they have good meaning to it.

there's a sense of confident aspiration to the band, to many of the songs. "grounded", "august 1st", and "bittersweet" prove the harmony of their true strengths.

  • great music

Jenny Choi and her piano are back with the help of her band The Third Shift. The inclusion of drums, guitars and bass add new energy and form to her beautiful pop ballads, offering her the option to pick up the beat in "My First Time". Choi offers you tunes that can rival other piano girls, by offering less anger then Fiona Apple, sensible lyrics next to Tori Amos, and a youthful approach over Sarah MacLachlan. Her second release is an outstanding achivement for indie musicians. http://www.girlmedia.com/jennychoireview.shtml
