notes

This album is what you get when an artist spends a good portion of his life "bottled-up", and finally busts loose to fly. Open Roads is the musical journey of Lynn Childers as he comes to grips with his love for music and his relationship with God.

As a teenager playing in garage bands, Lynn caught people's attention with his fiery guitar work. More than one "big-name" band asked him to lend his services to their sound. But the young axeman, loyal to his highschool buddies, turned the opportunities down. The price for his loyalty was to spend all his energy covering other people's music, ignoring creative winds of his own that needed to blow.

Lynn became a born-again Christian in 1982 in a church that had strict sanctions against anything that sounded like "the Devil's music." It was hard for the young rock & roller to adjust his taste and technique to satisfy his church. So for a number of years, Lynn simply dropped out of the music scene. During this time, he became a minister, and rationalized that his ministry would replace the void left in his life from music. This was a sacrifice that felt alot like dying to Lynn.

With time and soul searching, Lynn began to see the arts in general, and music in particular, in a new way. He recognized that the instrinsic beauty of music was a gift of God, and he could no longer draw a hard line between "secular" and "spiritual" music. Without losing his faith, Lynn found the freedom to write and perform music that didn't necessarily fit the "Christian" or the "secular" molds.

That's what Open Roads is all about. It's as if a person who loves to drive, got caught in the twilight zone, spending years driving in the heat and congestion of an inner city, but always longing to see the horizon. Then one day, blessed freedom came! The young man headed out onto Open Roads! Climb aboard--there's room for more!

Good start for a first album! Wonderful sound and great to listen to. The guitar parts are well done. My favorite cuts are Open Road, Too Cool for School and Seventh Day. A lot of variety, in the same style as Steve Morse.
