Deceptively simple songs that'll raise your spirits and break your heart.

notes

Hovering somewhere between folk, Americana, and pop, with influences ranging from Norah Jones to Ryan Adams, Charlotte Kendrick's "I Get Stupid" is a stunning, timeless collection of deceptively simple songs, each one of which will raise your spirit while simultaneously breaking your heart. The subtle and restrained production, courtesy of producer/collaborator Dan Rowe, provides the perfect moody backdrop to the main attraction - the smooth, intimate, and inviting voice of Charlotte Kendrick. You'll remember where you were and what you were doing the first time you heard Charlotte sing.

Though she had played music all her life, Charlotte didn’t get into song writing until her early twenties, when she spent 2 years in West Africa with the Peace Corps. With no electricity, her main source of entertainment became playing guitar and writing songs. The experience inspired her to pursue music as a career when she returned to the states. She moved to NYC, got a job bartending, and started going to open mics. She soon met producer and fellow-musician, Dan Rowe, and they began working on her debut album, "I Get Stupid". A few weeks before the release of "I Get Stupid", Dan accompanied Charlotte on bass at the Village Underground, and they have been on stage together ever since.

Since 2004, they have released a live album, "Live at the Roger Smith", booked a 40+ date tour across the country, and opened for artists such as Jackopierce, Lucy Kaplansky, and Steve Forbert. They have played almost 200 shows in the past 2 years. Recent accolades include:

- Top 10 Finailist at the Plowshares Songwriting Competition (March '07)
- New Folk Finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival (May '06)
- Winner of the Folk category in the VH1 Song of the Year Contest (March ’06)
- Honorable mention in the 2005 Billboard Song Contest

In the spring of 2006, Charlotte signed a publishing deal with Sonablast Records, the New York-based independent label. They are currently re-releasing "I Get Stupid".

  • Great CD!
    author: Valerie

I saw her in person a few months ago and l9ved her voice. When I found the CDs, I was prepared to be a little let down - recorded music can't possibly be as great as in person. Boy, was I wrong. I love her natural style and the pure emotion that is in every song. My only disappointment is that she only has a few cds out! I'm ready for more!

  • WOW
    author: Lindsey b

I heard this CD in a friend's car and could hardly wait to get to the computer to buy it! I love every song. It's relaxing but still upbeat. This CD hasn't left my CD player since I got it.

  • Loved it!

Addictive! It's on repeat in my cd player. Everyone who rides in my car, loves it!

  • Smart lyrics!
    author: Lyssa

Smart, smooth and sassy! There's a hint of folky pop crossing over into the 21st century. "It gets overwhelming when I look up and can't see the stars. Too many people; so much real estate waiting on Mars." Great stuff! That's what I want to hear more of!

  • Distinctive
    author: Suze

I love this CD! The music is catchy and every line of lyrics is distinctive and hits close to home. As someone living in a concrete jungle, I can relate with a wry smile to her comments about cell phones, traffic and too many people. She's about a yearning for "simpler things". Better yet, she gives it to me with every song. Down with techno-apathy; I'm moving to Mars.

  • outstanding--Charlotte has a beautiful, clear voice
    author: debby

It is unusual for me but I loved every track, the melodies, the lyrics, the guitars. It may be the first CD I wear out! Every song said something worth hearing!

  • This is an amazing CD- I love all the songs and not one I expect to get tired of hearing any time soon. :-)

  • You better have "REPEAT ALL" on your CD Player...

~ QUESTION: "Do you know how you can tell a wonderful singer/songwriter?" ~ ANSWER: "They have the ability to make time stop when you are listening to them" ~ Charlotte Kendrick makes time stand still... makes your heart sing along... and makes you want to fall in love again... Some people are singers... some are "artists"... this is art... "And she answers him with kisses..."

  • Beautiful voice and nice songs
    author: Charlie

At first I thought this CD a little bit boring - but I´ve completely changed my mind. You never get bored listening to Charlotte´s voice. And the melodies are pretty nice. They are not exciting or surprising but they stick in your head with a very good memory of a beautiful song. So I am now really happy that I own this CD - especially for "Play With Fire", it´s a great song!

  • Great CD - a real "find" perfect to listen to all day!
  • Husky Angel
