notes

The Louisville Dude, Piano Joys #PJ015 – Piano solo and duet boogie woogie , blues and stomps, played by Charlie Booty and Ben Conroy. Ben is from Austin, Texas, and has been playing boogie piano since before 1940. I first met Ben on the piano stage in the saloon of the Goldenrod Showboat, St. Louis, MO, during the 1970 Goldenrod Ragtime Jazz Festival. The booklet cover photo shows us at that piano not long after we met. I had just finished playing my own composition, Stompin’ In Texas, when a tall guy bounded on stage, wanting to play a 4 hand duet with me. We did a quick verbal rehersal of the 4 hand choreography away we went. From then on, until the demise of that festival in the mid-1990’s, Ben and I were regulars at the festival, doing a set of solo and duet boogie and blues piano numbers each year. Ben had met Albert Ammons at Café Society, New York, back in the early 1940’s, and was fortunate enough to have Albert show him a some of the Ammon’s riffs. One night Albert invited Ben to play an intermission set. All tunes on this CD were recorded in St. Louis during the Goldenrod Ragtime-Jazz Festivals.

I, Charlie Booty, have been playing boogie-blues piano since 1943, am self-taught and was born and raised in Flora, Louisiana, the piney woods section of Northwest Louisiana. I have played festivals, events and parties around the USA, Canada, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and have recorded on 3 LP's (out of print) and about 15 CD's. Quite a bit of information can be found on several websites about me.
