notes
Recently resuming solo mode after leaving London group Nazca Plain, East London’s Charlie Barnard brings out his 3rd album, Ivory Serpents & the Starving Tree, his first on fledgling independent Skyeyesea Records.
Channeling the spirit of psychedelic princes like Syd Barrett and Robyn Hitchcock along with a smudge of urban cowboy, Barnard’s latest release takes a more serious approach than previous efforts, brimming with biblical
hallucinations and psychedelic pop delusions.
Ivory Serpents & the Starving Tree is indeed a decidedly dark step forward, uncovering a rich tapestry of lyrics and melodies, as Charlie says, it’s a bit “Gnarled voices, Methedrine cowboys with junk smiles.”
Keep watch for Charlie’s next album, Peace Falls Upon the House, scheduled for release February 2009. Live dates to be announced.
Ivory Serpents & The Starving Tree is released on 28 July 2008 through Skyeyesea Records.
