Charlene Jewel's elegant interpretations of her favorite jazz classics reveal a true connoisseur of the jazz idiom. She has recently produced a fine selection of standards featuring fresh and dynamic arrangements. Backed by high-energy musicians, Charlene displays a passionate vocal style.
A seasoned singer, at ease in a variety of genres, Charlene has a natural feel for swing style compositions. It definitely shows in the challenging arrangement of "I've got the world on a string", where she starts with just the support of a steady walking bass line alone. In "Aqua de Beber", a classic bossa nova written by Carlos Jobim, she displays an impressive interpretation of the original lyrics in Portuguese. "The Long Road" is a contemporary composition written by Los Angeles based songwriter, Don Dominguez, exclaiming, "I need something back! What is this long road all about?" (...you will find the answer at the end of the song!) In the ballads, she shares her warmth and sincerity with smooth renditions of "My Foolish Heart" and "Never Let Me Go". With "Only Trust Your Heart", tastefully arranged in a slow bossa feel, Charlene crowns this captivating selection of songs accompanied by guitar and bass; just like in a "happy ending story" or a mid-afternoon chat on the patio with your friends in front of a cup of your favorite coffee.
An accomplished piano player as well, she got her springboard into Jazz music from Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, Alberta. Since then, she has performed worldwide as a Solo Artist and with her Quartet. After years of travelling, Charlene settled down in Los Angeles for six years where she took a rest from a hectic touring schedule and finally found the time to produce and record her first official project.
She has now returned home to Canada and lives in Toronto where she keeps a busy schedule teaching and performing... and secretly planning to produce her next album.
