notes
It is impossible to imagine Ukrainian music without the creations of Evgen Stankovych. Symphonies, ballet, instrumental concerts, film scores, chamber works, folk-opera, grandiose-symphonic canvas. In each genre Stankovych proclaimed his own weighted word. Worldly- because the creations accomplished by Stankovych have long ago entered beyond his own national boundaries by becoming the acquired property of general humanity.
The composer’s choral music occupy a notable place in music history. A cappella choirs- mixed, male, female are independent and self driven “instruments” of the genre diversity of choral music of Stankovych, to which belongs his finished songs, choral concerts, liturgies and single part choral compositions. “I have listened to much music which is close to the cannons and which taste of anachronisms to the exclusion of works of great composers,- states Stankovych.- As a perfect model I chose Bach whose music I have heard many times in many countries both in concert halls and churches. Practically all Bach’s works impresses through their colossal energy and creative freedom- a gift given only to certain individuals. This specter attracted my thoughts.”
The liturgy of John Chrysostom- is the last choral creation of E.Stankovych. ‘To compose a Liturgy,- says the composer, - I started to avoid conservative aesthetics of church singing. I attempted to do that which I understood, thus by-passing ancient church canons. In my mind everything has to unfold like life itself. Almighty God created mankind to achieve self-perfection, development and achievement of higher levels… I oriented myself on the texts of John Chrysostom. But this I had done before in creation for concert performance and used these words. My emotional state was that as to build a greater creation and reckoning of worldly nature, in which every re-iteration stipulates a clean musical development and expressive exposition…”
The choral creations of Evhen Stankovich have uniquely and actively been unfolded in resent years. This conditioned and flourished the choral traditions of Ukraine. The composer always yearns excellence in the execution of his creations, which has been equaled and presented on this disk, where the perfection of author’s thoughtfulness has achieved a truly responsible performance through the interpretations of Kapellmeister Mykola Hobdych, and his leadership of Kyiv chamber choir.
