notes
POCAS PALABRAS is an album of original and traditional songs, mixing contemporary and ancient Mexican instruments in a variety of styles. In POCAS PALABRAS Los Cenzontles, steeped in rich Mexican traditions, create new compositions and personal renditions of songs of old Mexico with instruments such as the jarana, tololoche, vihuela and quijada (jawbone), percussive zapateado dancing, Afro-Cuban conga, clave and bongo along with drums, violin, guitar, sax and clarinet. Styles featured include a lilting pirekua sung in the indigenous language of Michoacan; a sultry Columbian cumbia, a ranchera in the raucous conjunto style; and a rare ritual danza of Jalisco.
Legendary Cuban rumberos Gregorio 'El Goyo' Hernandez, Lazaro Rios and Roberto Borrell join Los Cenzontles as Guest Artists with a classic Mexican ranchera, in the rhythm of the Cuban guaguanco and an Afro-Cubanized son Jarocho from the tropics of Veracruz.
POCAS PALABRAS is also an ENHANCED CD, pop it in your computer to watch a video of Los Cenzontles original songs "POCAS PALABRAS" and "TU SONRISA".
POCAS PALABRAS was produced by Eugene Rodriguez, nominated for a Grammy for his production,Los Lobos album Papa's Dream.

one of the San Francisco Bay area’s leading voices
author: Michael Stone, Folk Roots MagazineAn astute contemporary interpretation of folk songs and dances that confirms the maturation of one of the San Francisco Bay area’s leading voices. Lovely vocal harmonies, understated tradititional instrumentation, a repertoire stretching from Aztlan to Veracruz to Cuba to Colombia, sharp percussion blended with some sharply-executed zapateado footwork, and outstanding turns on reeds and violin, make this their finest outing yet. Add two visually engaging video tracks, a vertiginous hand-held portrait pursuing the group from Michoacan to their home turf in El Norte, and an appealing straight-ahead recital of the title track, palpable testimony to the promise and diverse talent that is Los Cenzontles.
