Two years ago I had an exciting idea to release a Celtic Rock CD. Man, I've outdone myself! No. I take that back. It's not me. All I did was compile some of the best independent Celtic Rock bands around and organize them onto a CD. The result is destined to be a hit CD among contemporary and traditional Celtic music lovers alike--"The Secret World of Celtic Rock."

Yes, it's taken a long time to pick some amazing tracks, mix and match them, and try to have a common theme. I found some brilliant bands in the process. The CD is not yet completely finalized, but I couldn't help but get the word out now since I hope to have the CD out by St. Patrick's Day.

  • The Pefect Compilation CD! Rock + Celtic = PERFECTION!

    You know the truth about compilation cds: If you're lucky you get 3-4 songs you like, and the rest is rather 'meh'. Well, this cd does what I thought couldn't be done! This is compilation cd of various celtic and rock groups from all over the globe, with different styles and sounds. And they all are awesome! Trying to pick 'favorites' for this cd is impossibly, because after you've reached over 15 faves, you realize, "Oh, heck, the whole cd is my favorite!" There are some amazingly awesome songs here. Though it's a 'rock' album, it definitely has a 'celtic' feel to it, not just the celtic 'sound', but the underlying tones of joyful laughter and poignant sorrow that can be found in all celtic music. This cd is an absolute delight, and I've given it as a gift to all my friends this Christmas. Wonderful job putting this one together!

    Well put togather CD. I had heard serveral of the artists and a few of the songs on the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast put out by Marc. But who wants to keep searching for it over and over in the podcast? I love this CD cause It has my faves and they are readily acessable. Great job Marc.

    Rock - I think not. Rocks? Most definitely. The thing about indie music, where ever it's from, is its creativity - and musicality - which is ever so evident here. I bought this on the strength of Marc Gunn's CelticMP3 website and am glad I did.

    I come from Poland and I don't speak english very well. So I can tell only few words about this CD. I think that this album is wonderful. I hear first time about this music group but this CD encourage me to listen this type of music.

    I try not to be a total trad snob, but sometimes I feel I am. This is one of the albums that makes me remember that it's okay to break out of the box. All in all, this is a wonderful compilation of artists you may otherwise miss as you’re sorting through Seven Nations and Glengarry Bhoys CDs at the festival tents.     This is my new favorite CD! Marc did such an outstanding job putting it together! I have really good hearing and I don't like to turn up my stereo too loud. If it's set at a 9 it's usually loud enough, but this CD demands to be played at no less than 20! I have been rocking out to it up and down the road all week! It makes me smile and dance!Great Compilation!

    Compilation CD’s are notoriously difficult for the reviewer & the editor. Frequently however, and it holds very true in this case, compilation CD’s are a treat for the listener. When approached to write this review, I looked at it with trepidation but I took the task in hand; in part because I believe in the compiler’s sense of musical taste & adventure and in his ability to pick songs that stand apart as an individual track, yet could complement each other in the larger sense of the album. Secondly, and possibly the greater catalyst in the decision; I’m increasingly fond of the burgeoning scene of Celtic Rock. The editor of this CD has done a fine job of pulling together music of various backgrounds but with a common theme. Thus, this audaciously-titled Secret World of Celtic Rock is a frenetic journey through Jethro Tull-like arrangements & Pogues-ish cacophony on some tracks. Yet on others it’s meditative, almost ethereal strains bring you out of the down & dirty world of Celtic Rock into the nearly new-age reach-for-the-stars electronics espoused and made popular by artists such as Loreena McKennit & Enya. No, you won’t find Jethro Tull, the Pogues, Loreena McKennit or Enya on this CD; you will find, instead, nineteen (19) artists capable of boldly striding where these other artists have previously walked while stamping their own footprint on the genre. Some of the selections in this collection are original music with original lyrics such as Heather Dale’s wonderfully ethereal Mordred’s Lullaby or The Elders’ rock-steady Moore St. Girls. Other pieces are old favorites getting new treatment like Paisley Close’s fantastically haunting rendition of Sovay or Amadan’s angry version of Johnny Jump Up. Lenahan sings & plays for us the blues on Nothin’ while The Electrics dig deep to pull out some Scottish blue-grass roots (and singeing fiddle-work) with The Grass is Greener. Cold Glencoe by Rise tells the story of the infamous Glencoe massacre while evoking primal memory with emotional & lingering harmonies. The Indulger’s bring the rowdy emotion of Ireland’s fabled rebel songs into In Like Flynn. You’ll find yourself tapping your toes to this one as well as Day After Day by the amusingly named Tears for Beers out of Germany. As superb as the above songs are, sadly the collection does have its negative side as well. Rimbo’s My Love is Like a Red Red Rose does not, in my opinion, belong on the album. Although an enjoyable song in its own right, its inclusion lends a dichotomy to the collection that was too intrusive and perhaps should have been saved for The Secret World of Celtic Electronica. The Day We Set Sail by Tale & Theo Niessink tries too hard and stagnates half way through while Black 47’s St. Patricio Brigade is not indicative of the talent of this great group and could have been left out or replaced with any one of their more note-worthy songs. Two instrumental pieces, however round out the album and are worthy of note. Collectively they are my favorite music on the album; Brothers 3 uniquely styled, Celtic-Jazz-Fusion song Slip Me 5 uses modern instrumentation and arrangement to provide a brilliant toe-tapping merging of two Irish jigs, while Groovy Scooby by the Rogues is one of the best examples of bagpipes forging a path into the collective consciousness. It’s time that the Secret World of Celtic Rock remains a secret no longer and makes its way to your CD collection. It’s diversity & song selection will be welcome in any household and should be an integral part of any Celtic Rock collection. So, grab a Guinness & go grab your copy of The Secret World of Celtic Rock. Slainte!

  • An amazing collection of Celtic rock music!

    When Marc Gunn sent me a preview copy of this album, I wasn't entirely certain what to expect. My exposure to Celtic rock has been very limited and generally consisted of avoiding it at festivals in favour of the more traditional music I know and love so much. Upon listening to this album, I realized how much I've been missing! While my first love with always be the traditional side of Celtic music, the rock world has come a close second. This album, which packs 19 different groups into every little crevice of the CD, is at turns exciting, dramatic, driving, and just plain fun. It begins with, of all instruments, the Australian didgeridoo, which launches into Heather Dale's "Mordred's Lullaby," a rather sinister lullaby sung by Morgan LaFay to her bastard son Mordred (both of Arthurian legend). Heather's unique voice coupled with a rock beat and somewhat New Age sounding accompaniment give the opening track of the CD a very dramatic flavouring. Besides the opening track, one of my other favourites is Rimbo's version of the traditional Scottish song "Red, Red Rose," which features Marc Gunn on vocals. Simply put, Marc's voice is gorgeous and Rimbo's background is a perfect complement for it. Other highlights include The Rogues' "Groovy Scooby," an exciting instrumental featuring highland bagpipes and drums, and Amadan's "Johnny Jump Up/Swallowtail Jig," which features a revved-up version of the song, "Johnny Jump Up" followed by the traditional jig, "The Swallowtail." If you have no experience in the realm of Celtic rock, this is an excellent album to start with. With such a wide variety of styles, you're bound to find at least one (or 19) bands you really enjoy. And even better, Marc provides links to the bands' sites in the CD jacket, so if you're interested in purchasing the full albums, it's easy to find where to do that! And if you do know about Celtic rock, this is still a great album to introduce you to many of the independent artists performing it around the world. It's definitely not an album to be missed!
