notes
Celeste Starchild (and yes...that is her real name!) is an exciting new vocalist best known for her unforgettable lyrics that convey her talent and originality. You can hear Celeste live with her band, Butter Sweet, or as an acoustic duo, as accompanied by international guitar sensation Andrew Pal.
Celeste has been building buzz in the DC Metro area for two years and draws a dedicated fan base. She released her debut EP, "Time Release" (produced by Kevin Gutierrez at Assembly Line Studios) to a sold-out crowd in June 2007.
About the girl... Celeste's journey into music took the scenic route as the daughter of a pair of musicians. Her father was renowned musician Rick Schmidt who performed with the likes of Doc Scantlin's Imperial Palms Orchestra and Lowen and Navarro at venues from the Met in New York to the White House. Her mother, Judith Starchild, is a singer-songwriter who has written volumes of inspired songs, with several full length records to her credit. Celeste's first experience in a recording studio was with her mother at age 10. Growing up with “alternative" parents, her memories of childhood include jam sessions at the house, picking dandelions for dandelion wine, and shiitake mushroom farming. But Celeste rebelled by following a more conventional path to success trading the mountains of southwest Virginia for a powerful career in business. But as fate would have it, when her dad passed away and left her a 1933 Gibson acoustic guitar, she couldn’t keep her hands off it. Since teaching herself to play, her rich and dramatic voice conveys her stories of disillusionment and "almost" loves, grabbing fans of all ages .

We met last evening in Evening Star after the gig (Open-Dm-guy) when I picked up a copy of your CD. I'm writing this on a slow train from DC to New York It seemed like a good time to put it on my laptop and take a listen. I've bought CDs of singers I've heard in bars before and when I've played them the day after, when the beer and atmosphere have worn off, I've always thought "why did I bother" and stuck them on the shelf and never listened to them again. But your CD is very different. I've played it through three times now and I like it more each time. All the tracks are definitely going onto my IPod and the CD is going to live in my car. The technical quality is excellent and the band are very fine, but what makes it special is that you have a GREAT voice and a remarkable song-writing ability. There is not one musical cliche in there and each track sounds fresh and new. You have a special ability and I am very envious (dammit). I really liked the tempo shift on "If love was a train" and the lyrics are very witty, but my favourite is "Apple of My Eye" - it's a really tricky song calling for lots of vocal dexterity and perfect timing - you pull it off effortlessly. - Submitted via email and copied here 4-4-08
The name is real and so is the talent
author: Ted Kelly, Program Director, UPOP 29, WorldSpace/XM Satellite RaThe name is real and so is the talent, a refreshing sound that smoothly moves you through an ecclectic mix of blues, ballads and country with distinct American roots and rhythm.
This excellant debut CD
author: Tom PrincipatoIt's a pleasure to watch Celeste grow and develop. I like where Celeste takes me in her songs, whether it's Reaching for the Sky, or on a backstreet in the dark searching for a light, or reminding us that Love is indeed a Train. This excellent debut CD showcases her great singing and songwriting as a great American original.
Definitely leaves you wanting more....
author: EricReally heartfelt songs, sung in a voice that carries you along beautifully. It's a musical journey, but much too short! These six songs tell you that Celeste and Butter Sweet are the real deal, and leave you wanting more...
Love this stuff!
author: AuddioplayI am a sucker for a hot singer/songwriter that sounds as good as she looks. I love the originals on this CD especially "Remember When", although I can imagine hearing "Apple of My Eye" on the radio. Looking forward to the next release and possibly catching a show the next time I am in town.
impressive first release
author: juliaThis CD is impressive for a first release and makes you want to hear more tracks! (Six on this CD) Celeste Starchild's voice is sweet, powerful, and clearly dynamic enough to pull both qualities off at the same time! A rising star here? Extremely listenable!
honest music with heart!
author: jasonTime Release will take you on a journey not bound by style or genre but a journey full of soul. Great writing and great musicianship. Can't wait for more!
