notes
"Roads" is the much-anticipated sophomore release from Cas Lucas, an artist who has certainly turned some heads over the last couple years. Tracks from "Roads" were first posted on the San Francisco based artist's MySpace page early in 2006, and they almost instantly received a massive fan reaction. After receiving international critical acclaim for his debut CD, the acoustic live album, "Giving it Back," and winning an devoted fan base for himself (impressively large for an impendent artist) through touring, myspace buzz galore, and an ever-growing street team program, "Roads" promises to be the CD that brings this talented guitarist/singer/songwriter’s music into the spotlight.
Lucas' knack for creating infectious hooks and the ubiquitous pop sensibilities evoked in his guitar playing have led to frequent comparison with the likes of Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, John Mayer, and Sting (a Cas Lucas fan himself, who featured Cas on his official MySpace's "top friends"). But Lucas' style is more than that - beyond the hooks and lyrics, his musicianship spans the ages, calling to mind both the passionate intensity of Robert Johnson's raw blues, and the intricate, tonal playfulness of Michael Hedges's instrumental virtuosity.
Co-producing "Roads" with Lucas was Adam Rossi, best known for his work on both albums by local Bay Area sensation, LUCE. Lucas and Rossi assembled a talented group of session musicians to play on the album, including players who had previously contributed to projects by artists like John Mayer, Counting Crows, Chuck Prophet, and Boz Scaggs. (members of LUCE & Lucas’ live band are also featured on “Roads”) Lucas thrived in collaboration with this group of seasoned heavy-hitter musicians, calling "Roads" his "first chance to really get it right… My first opportunity to present my music the way it was meant to sound from the beginning."
Lucas pulls no punches in his lyrics or with his musicianship... The songs just "go there." This is music by an artist who isn't afraid to lay it on the line or create something that doesn't fit perfectly into any standard rock demographic. Fans of Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Dave Matthews Band, and John Mayer will no doubt love this disc, but “Roads” truly has a little something for everybody. Lucas' music has been embraced by fans in all age groups and played on mainstream radio, but it still manages to retain it's "street cred." along they way. While many of today's acoustic rock artists make deliberate attempts to incorporate eclectic blues, jazz, funk, and soul influences into their sound, these elements shine through naturally in Lucas' music. His music just does what it does, and it does it well.
"Amid diverse influences, this guitarist has found his own sound." -San Francisco Chronicle
"Cas Lucas is a talented artist. I like what he writes, I and think he can change peoples' lives." - Sting
"Cas Lucas is on the verge of something big... Backed by a strong cast of producers and players and armed with the type of laid-back acoustic groove that has yielded hordes of fans for artists like JACK JOHNSON and JOHN MAYER, Cas Lucas is poised on the edge of mainstream success.” - Times Standard
"Compared to acoustic-pop artists such as JOHN MAYER and JACK JOHNSON, Lucas gives his adult alternative pop/rock a blues-tinged feel that has received international critical acclaim... Lucas is a more gifted guitarist than JOHNSON. He's got a casually bell-clear voice, and his breezy tunes bounce along sweetly." - New Times Weekly
"Songs like "Dream a Window, and 'Feel You", put him for me, squarely on the path of the great storytellers and songwriters, like PETE SEEGER, and JOHN PRINE... Watching and listening to Lucas is a joy, because you get the feeling you are watching a true bluesman in the making.” - Beyond the Chron. (Bay Area Weekly)
"This Bay Area artist will reel you in with similar hooks, lyricism and charm of JOHN MAYER and JASON MRAZ."- California Daily Aggie
"There's an old soul in Cas Lucas's young body. One wonders where kids like this get such strong, world-weary emotions coursing through their throats... Mesmerizing guitar picking through out, with Lucas spinning a web with his strings; They should call him Spider-man for the knots and tangled structures he creates with his fingers" - Whisperin' and Hollerin Magazine (UK)

my favorite CD of the year
author: Steve - JambaseI hear a lot of CD's by a lot of artists who claim to be influenced by and paying tribute to classic rock and delta blues, but this is the guy. Even before I heard his music blasting on my local radio station or before his myspace won him an audience, I've had my eye on you, Cas Lucas. Congratulations on a fine fine album. You and Mr. Rossi are talented men. Jambase has your back.
killed it!
