An exciting live collaboration by two of the greatest alto saxophonists in the history of jazz.

notes

This double CD captures alto sax masters Benny Carter and Phil Woods in peak form at the Regattabar in Cambridge, MA. Recorded over three nights in March of 1996, the album also features Carter regulars Chris Neville on piano and Sherman Ferguson on drums, with premiere Boston bassist John Lockwood. The repertoire includes standards as well as originals by each saxophonist.

Carter and Woods have enjoyed a long-standing friendship, and on the all-too-rare occasions when they perform together each always inspires the other. This mutual inspiration and admiration is clearly evident on their two previous recorded collaborations: the epic 1961 album Further Definitions (MCA/Impulse) and the critically acclaimed 1989 My Man Benny, My Man Phil (MusicMasters).

ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE adds the excitement and spontaneity of an appreciative and responsive live audience. Woods summed up the event as "one of my most fulfilling gigs ever...I am delighted that it has been recorded."

CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE:

**** DOWN BEAT--chosen one of the top ten jazz albums of the year, Down Beat Critics' Poll 1997

"Mutual respect lifts the music to even greater heights than one might imagine possible from these two great players."
--Russ Chase, IAJRC Journal

"An instant classic for anyone interested in the state of the jazz saxophone."
--Larry Hollis, Cadence

"If you only buy ten CDs this year, get this one. . .not to be missed!"
--Mel Martin, Saxophone Journal

  • Two Legends - It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This
    author: Doug Martin

Legendary saxophonist Phil Woods and equally legendary composer, arranger and musician Benny Carter team up for this two-CD live set. Everyone is in top form on this date, as evident on the jumping opening number "Sometimes I'm Happy". A lot of Benny Carter originals make up the setlist, along with some standards, a few Ellingtons and one from Phil Woods (a fine composer himself). The most outstanding track: the slow blues of "Willow Weep For Me".
