notes
In the last three years alone he’s driven 80,000 miles to play in more than 50 cities in 20 states. When you figure in the airplanes and rental cars, it adds up to a lot of scenery and a lot of songs.
For Craig Carothers, the journey, and the songs, began in the Pacific Northwest. Craig’s parents were both music teachers. Around the house, sounds ranged from Brubeck to Mancini; Victor Borgé to Jonathan Winters. Later influences included Motown, Joni Mitchell, Tom Lehrer, and The Beatles.
Venues were plentiful around his home in Portland, Oregon, and Craig spent more than 20 years playing almost every night of the week inside a forty-block radius.
During that time, he toured with or opened for a wide variety of acts: Mose Allison, Karla Bonnoff, Jonatha Brooke, Rosanne Cash, Bruce Cockburn, Paula Cole, Robert Cray, Catie Curtis, Crash Test Dummies, Donovan, Peter Himmelman, John Hiatt, Leo Kottke, Patty Larkin, Michael McDonald, Dennis Miller, Anne Murray, Danny O'Keefe, Leroy Parnell, Paula Poundstone, Boz Skaggs, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Richard Thompson, Jethro Tull, Romeo Void, Loudon Wainwright III, Tim Weisberg, David Wilcox, Warren Zevon, and many others.
Things changed in 1995, when country music star Trisha Yearwood recorded Craig’s song “Little Hercules.” He hung a gold record on the wall and started traveling to Nashville on a regular basis.
A publishing deal followed, and over the next five years his travels produced new performance opportunities as well. Soon, he had regular gigs in Nashville, Birmingham, Atlanta, Houston, and Little Rock.
In 2000 he made Nashville his home. Trips back to the west coast started to include stops in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, Phoenix, and Salt Lake.
In recent years Craig’s songs have been recorded by artists including: Kathy Matea, Lorrie Morgan, Sons Of The Desert, Kate Markowitz, Andrea Zonn, Steve Seskin, Berkley Hart, and Peter, Paul and Mary.
Quotes:
“ …he excels at creating smart, memorable material and putting it across with abundant personality”
—Birmingham News
“...the right mix of weary-eyed cynicism and helpless hearted romanticism...”
—Performing Songwriter Magazine
“He has a voice that should be famous.”
—Patty Larkin
“Who? Never heard of him.”
—John Prine
Craig is now traveling the country in support of his new CD, “Solo.”

Great cd, must hear the sleeping song
author: Marcia MechlerI bought this cd several years ago at one of his live shows, and it is great! I especially love "The Sleeping Song" and "Open Mike"
Very clever songwriting from the lyrics to the the music!
author: Paul NyeI fell for "More For Me" all the way. I should know better because I'm a writer too. But, Carothers' caught me off-guard on this one with the beautiful piano intro and lyrics that just "captured my heart" by their profoundness and immediacy. Then came the chorus, and I realized I'd been taken for a fool. This song is a songwriter's masterpiece. Very, very clever. I love it so much, I can't stop playing it. What a great wordplay. It's just the message our culture needs during these political and "myspace/emo" times. We're really all too caught up in our own world of our own opinions, viewpoints and lifestyles. Thank you Craig for peeling the self-centered slime off my eyes. Now if I can just get that log out of my eye socket somehow........
GREAT!
author: Ann W.After seeing Craig live at a house party in Norfolk, VA and buying several of his CD's, I really wanted a compilation of these type of songs. This CD has the best of Craig's humor! I love it. It is the pick me up I need on any given day...
Two great ones, but most lack spark
author: Ernest SmithMore For Me - and - Too Many Holes In your Head - are really good. More For Me - should be the theme song for liberals. Most of them want everyone else to give so they can enjoy, yet very few of them are charitable. As for the rest of the album it lacks the catchiness of those two songs.
Never Gets Old
author: Doug Fitch (NSAI/BMI) www.dougfitch.comI own every one of Craig's CD's and play them over..and over..and over..There is no better songwriter out there. Many other pro-writers are equally gifted of course, but none could be considered "better." When you're this good, "better" is a relative term. His writing is pure genious and his wit reflects his down to earth personality in real life. He is the total personification of those who work and live in Nashville: down to earth, creative genious, and willing to work with and mentor new writers via the NSAI. Craig is a generous spirit and his genius never ceases to amaze me. Buy all 6 of his CD's..you will not be sorry.
Creative, clever and very enjoyable. Great melodies and guitar work.
author: David DearbornA clever and humorous mind at work with natural talent for music.
Witty, shining star...
author: Lydia Smith nashsongweaver@yahoo.comThis is definitely one of my favorite Craig Carother's cd's. Living in good ol' Nashvegas, my favorite on this album is Open Mike, but each and every song is well crafted lyrically, musically and vocally. And FUNNY, very funny!
Best Comedy Writer!
author: A cc FanCraig Carothers is a great songwriter and a great singer, but he is the best comedy songwriter out there. Every single song on this collection is fantastic and yet unlike most funny songs, they are so well written and produced that you can listen over and over again. Have fun!!
