Carol Ames is a Texas-bred Americana artist. Her music is a mixture of styles and influences that create a sound uniquely her own. Her new CD, Shades of Indigo, which Carol also produced, was released in March 2005 and is already garnering critical acclaim. With her sights set high, the San Diego resident reached into her hat and pulled out the kind of record no one expected.
Shades of Indigo is a sexy, energetic Americana record with hints of country in which Carol augments her fine songwriting with vocal performances to match.
The music community has taken notice as shown by her prestigious win of the Grand Prize in the International 2004 John Lennon Songwriting Contest for the song
West Virginia. JLSC were impressed with the originality of the song, Carol's soaring vocals as well as the fine tuned production. The many powerful emotional and stylistic impressions on the record might make for a diverse listen for Carol's fans and the many converts bound to pile on her wagon, but to Carol, this variety of emotional expression all comes from the same place. Carol pens lyrics about life, places and relationships that unfold like well-written stories. Carol draws from a variety of influences including adult alternative, Americana, country, jazz, pop and rock. All twelve songs on this CD have something special to offer with a diversity of instrumentation and Carol's rich, expressive vocals. 'Nothin' But a Heartache' is about moving on after a bad relationship. A fiddle gives the track a country feel but the up-tempo pulse and Ames' spirited vocals energize it. 'Underneath the Texas Sky' is a slower more reflective song with vibrant instrumentation – especially the jam towards the end – and Ames' singing is stellar. 'West Virginia' features delicate yet intricate instrumentation blending perfectly with Carol's vocals that are subtle yet powerful. Carol Ames is a voice to be heard and Shades of Indigo is vibrant ranging from soft hues to deep moods!
Can't miss country/pop rocker that's sure to please
author: Craig YerkesCarol Ames must have listened well when she was given that all-important “first impressions are very important” speech that we all get at some point. “Shades of Indigo” begins with Carol doing a “1,2,3,4” count off that foreshadows the spirit and attitude of the entire CD. With that countdown, Ames confidently lets the listener know that she’s bringing some serious fun and that she knows exactly what the hell she’s doing when it comes to making a great record. After the countdown, the music kicks in with a can’t-miss, up-tempo country rocker, “Nothin’ But A Heartache”. Listen closely and you’ll notice that there is simply nothing missing from this track that you would want to hear on a song like this. The lead vocals are strong and playfully pleasing, the rhythm section is tight, the harmony vocals are perfectly slick and the stellar fiddle solo adds the perfect compliment to it all. The second track, “Underneath The Texas Sky”, is ear candy of an entirely different kind, bringing the tempo down and offering a seriously effective, bittersweet ballad that may be the best “personal letter turned song” offering since Kenny Loggins’ “Danny’s Song”. “Mercury” and “Why Does Love” keep the goods coming and coming. At this point in the recording, if you stop to take stock of what you’re hearing, you have to be impressed by the ultra catchy hooks and how they are slyly balanced with sophisticated, musically complex passages and touches. That mix of simple pleasures and tricky arrangements/musicianship sets this record apart. What also elevates the material is the quality and maturity of the lyrical offerings, especially on “Mercury”. Males (straight ones, at least) will most likely skip right past “So Into You”, but my guess is that the women will gobble up this nicely packaged cotton candy with glee. “West Virginia” is the crown jewel of the recording and perfectly balances all of the positive elements of this CD in one song. “West Virginia” recently won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest in the country category, deservedly so. Listen to how Ames’ voice delivers the song with just the right emotion, inflection and clarity and how the instrumental bridge just keeps layering on tasty riffs over more tasty riffs as if it was just sounding too good to stop. Classic track. What follows “West Virginia” does seem to slip a notch, offering pleasing (if not stellar) country/pop songs that may not inspire as much admiration as what came before. That is, until the last track. “Any Luck at All” brings back the magic of the first 4 tracks in a beautiful “all grown-up married person” love song. The sentiment of the song is perfectly communicated in yet another flawlessly executed lead vocal and a beautifully restrained, subtle backing track. “Any Luck at All” (along with many other tracks) showcases the wonderfully musical and consistently complimentary guitar virtuosity of David Beldock. All of the musicians on this record are top notch, but there are (thankfully) no heavy-handed musical back-flips to distract from the overall effect of the CD. “Shades of Indigo” takes the listener on a completely satisfying musical ride…gets you in it’s warm embrace and occasionally reaches around to pinch your ass.
