notes
Formed in the spring of 2005, Careless Hearts has quickly gone from being a sketched out idea on the back of a coaster into a fully articulated working rock 'n' roll outfit. From the classic four-piece line-up of guitars (Paul Kimball and Derek See), bass (Rob Miller) and drums (Craig Heitkam), to the three-part vocal harmonies, Careless Hearts represent an approach to playing that's rich in tradition and roots, yet remains exciting and novel in execution.
Taking inspiration from California artists that came before them (Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, X, and The Beat Farmers, to name just a few), Careless Hearts place melody, honesty, and heartfelt playing above all else, and the evidence is all there on their dynamic self-titled debut, "Careless Hearts". Eleven tracks, all originals, solid from top to bottom with stories of sleepless nights, love gone awry, and the thrill of second chances.
Thanks for listening.

Kicking the long dead carcass of South Bay twang back to life
author: Hicks With SticksThe Careless Hearts are an alt-country band winning hearts and minds from San Jose to San Francisco, and have just released their first CD. The songwriting on this CD is its first attention getter. They takes their listeners into places new and familiar, but rarely in expected ways. Their sound covers bases from Wilco to the Velvet Underground and point in between. "Chattering Teeth," which kicks off the CD, tackles the nervous energy of situations that bring about clicking teeth and knocking knees. "22 Filmore" wraps love lost into a local package by comparing it to the release of the air breaks on a well-known San Francisco bus line. They have are other stories, some dark, some personal and some uplifting, and all for your entertainment pleasure. As HWS has said before, these guys are single-handedly kicking the long dead carcass of South Bay twang back to life.
"Happy music about misery"
author: San Jose Mercury NewsThe Careless Hearts' music is a mostly upbeat blend of country and rock that should please fans of Rank and File or the Old 97's, though such lyrics as "some kinds of agony block out the sun and they leave you so numb you go blind" hark back to Kimball's grunge past.
This band is not to be missed
author: Sam Mellon and The SkylarksThis band is destined to be in everybody's collection someday. Fantastic tunes, dynamic songwriting, and guitar player that smokes the pants off of most these days. Reminiscent of early Whiskeytown, with the pop sensibility of a mid-career Replacements, this band tears it up live. Get a copy while you can still say.. "I bought them back when..."
