notes
The nagging tick of boredom; the persistence and paradox of the American Dream; the new hopes and disappointments that come with an aging population subjected to prolonged existence in the dating scene; the discovery of human warmth in the seemingly cold heart of technology. These are a few of the topics that Chicago-based Call it Karma tackles in their first full-length album, Days Go By. Weaving together elements of folk, rock, and jam-band jazz, they mix finely crafted songwriting with explosive musicianship and unusual instrumentation (trumpet and hand percussion, no kit!). Fresh originals are paired with appropriate covers, enriching both. This is a soundtrack for life in the 21st century city

Superb
author: Keith W. UpsonI apologize in advance for not writing well – Days Go By deserves better. This is a great album. Every track. Two covers (Suzanne Vega’s Caramel and the Dead’s Friend of the Devil) nestle in well with eleven original tracks (eleven!) to form one cohesive aural treat. The songs are fresh and original, the lyrics catchy, memorable (yet not ‘pop’ish) and at times emotional, the performances accomplished but not overdone, and the production simultaneously raw yet flawless. Days Go By sounds deceptively simple at times, but that is an exciting part of the genius at work here: these people are good, and seem at ease with what they are doing. Every member has that rare combination of professional skill and an artist’s touch, the result sounding immediately great and likeable, and with further examination, effortless complexity is revealed. There is a lot going on here, and it all sounds good and works well. Ms. Adams’ voice is silky smooth and expressive. Mr. Krueger’s guitar work is nimble, has great tone, and at times forms an integral part of the Williams-Miller-Adams percussion. Mr. Miller’s trumpet (and, on Confession, flugelhorn) adds a fourth dimension to many tracks – sometimes complementing the existing melody and sometimes defining it – that kicks the whole work up a few more notches. Mr. Silver has mastered the bass and amazingly is allowed to actually play it (see Confession for a brilliant example) to great effect. Mr. Silver’s bass is a welcome instrument here, no mere superfluous appendage. Mr. Williams percussion is perfect in both style and substance: there is no kit, because there shouldn’t be. The production is spot on: the songs have (gasp!) dynamics, are mixed well, and are not overproduced. It is no stretch to expect that the songs would sound exactly the same live. Days is great fun to listen to. The songs are well written, masterfully performed, and well produced. If you like good music, you’ll love this album.
