notes

Jonathan Byrd splashed onto the folk scene in a big way. After winning the North Carolina Songwriter's Co-op 'Song of the Year,' Jonathan released a debut album with a maturity usually only heard of in the majors. Having heard a cut from the CD, folk legend Tom Paxton contacted Byrd immediately, saying, "What a treat to hear someone so deeply rooted in tradition, yet growing in his own beautiful way." 'Wildflowers' has already become a radio favorite across the United States, Canada, and Europe.

As an album, 'Wildflowers' slides easily from bluegrass into country, and then country blues. Acoustic guitar, dobro, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and Byrd's unique voice combine in ways both old and new, traditional and original. One critic in Austin called Jonathan "the Alison Krauss of the male gender," for his soaring neo-traditional sounds.

Jonathan Byrd is a magical live performer. 'Sing Out!' magazine says Byrd is, "a songwriter of exceptional talent... with the stark storytelling of the finest traditional balladeers." You owe it to yourself to see him live; complete tour dates are posted at www.jonathanbyrd.com.

ahhhhh! I love it! I love it!

  • Don't even think about it, just buy it!

I found Jonathan Byrd by searching other NC artists on CD Baby. "Wildflowers" contains songs which (IMHO) are basically Jonathan's venues for expressing his emotions pertaining to many varied subjects. I really appreciated the way he incorporated actual places here in NC to his story songs. Real songs about real places, real music performed by real people. No muzack here. Buy it.

  • outstanding original ballads steeped in the folk tradition

This is an outstanding collection of mostly original ballads that feel like you've always known them. Jonathan Byrd's expressive voice conveys subtle shadings of emotion. My favorite tracks (Jonathan gives us a very generous 16) are Velma, Golden Glow of Autumn, Ashe County Fair, and The Sparrow, but they are all great. I haven't wanted to take this record out of my CD player and every time I hear it there's something new to discover in a rhyme, an inflection of tone, an instrumental chord change. --And Jonathan's second album, The Waitress, is just as good!

  • Excellent!

The catchy tunes and flowing lyrics stick in your head and make you want to listen to the songs again and again. 'Wildflowers', 'Eli's Cotton Gin', and 'Ashe County Fair' are now among our favorite songs. This album puts to shame most of the stuff spewed out by those big record companies run by 'The Man'. ;-) Jonathan is an amazing talent. We just bought 'The Waitress' and can't wait for it to arrive.
