Rooted in the New York no wave scene, the mostly female Bush Tetras had a minimalistic sound that set funky African and Caribbean rhythms against the amateurish guitar clank'n'sputter typical of the city's early-'80s post-punk. The group consisted of vocalist Cynthia Sley, guitarist Pat Place, bassist Laura Kennedy, and drummer Dee Pop; Place had worked with James Chance/White in both the Contortions and the bizarre no wave funk outfit the Blacks. The group's recorded output was rather scarce; they debuted in 1980 with the Too Many Creeps EP, which was followed the next year by another EP, Rituals. The Tetras disbanded in 1983, at which point the Better Late Than Never compilation gathered their entire studio output - the two EPs, two singles, and a few previously unreleased demos. A collection of live material from late 1982 was also released that year under the title Wild Things. Sley formed a quintet called the Lovelies with former Richard Hell & the Voidoids/Shriekback guitarist Ivan Julian, while Dee Pop and his wife Deerfrance formed Floor Kiss with ex-8 Eyed Spy guitarist Michael Paumgardhen; Place went on to work with Maggie Estep in the mid-'90s.
In "Boom In The Night", we have their original studio recordings, 1980-83, remastered by band member/drummer Dee Pop. It includes all their Clash period production work by Topper Headon and Joe Blaney.

Essential post punk!!
author: JR ManitobaActually, this deserves more than 5 stars, can I give it 6? The Bush Tetras blended post punk with funk better than anyone since the first Gang of Four LP! Actually, a female led Gang of Four is not a bad comparison, but the Bush Tetras have a heavier, more menacing sound overall, while still bringing the funk! There has never been another band quite like this one. Absolutely essential!!!
