notes
"You'd expect Joni Mitchell, but you'd be wrong. Cork's answer to David Gray is how she's been described in the past, and it's not too far off.
"Buckley has a great voice, a great ear for a catchy tune, and best of all she isn't stuck in the past, like so many singer-songwriters.
"What starts off as being an average Irish female singer-songwriter's album soon melts into Billie Holiday-esque lovesongs and Portishead dirges, before taking us all by surprise and coming over all 4AD. The record label, not the year.
"Hints of Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins and Heidi Berry abound, making this a very refreshing and exiting debut album, which is sentmental without self-indulgence, from one of the finest voices on the Cork live circuit."
Four stars (****) Evening Echo.

"We all know what to expect of the bittersweet folksy blues pursuit; love, like anything else subject to our cruel whim, is to be drawn out and rewrought in a mimetic frenzy of acoustic guitar, plaintive vocals and tear-jerking harmonies. In a Fiona Apple kind of way, the dulcet Buckley is another lady who's mistaken a paper bag for a dove.
"Offering her reflections on love to the swelling ranks of her (no doubt collegiate) fan base, in 'into your arms' Buckley sings about 'searching...for her gallant knight' and the like. Some anachronistic pastoral images of hanging out under trees with your lover are constructed around the always relevant themes of looking for love, happiness, and the culmination of your dreams, and as with all good songwriting 'into your arms' is romantic while retaining its integrity.
"Some decidedly Beth Gibbons sounding vocals pervade many of the songs, not in an imitative way so much as being pleasantly familiar to the listener in their slow, lazy, sensual delivery, like in 'if you follow', 'so free' and 'honeysuckle', where Buckley's beutiful voice does justice to her evocative lyrics.
'Whirlwind' follows up the oft synthy 'so free' with minimalist piano and nostalgic violin, and features the lines, 'I realised you never knew me at all, It was a whirlwind with you' - another paean to unrequited love or rather the kind that is stifled before it has a chance to realise itself.
"The bluesy 'grey love' - 'the colours of the rainbow was the dream I had with you/But you took my heart and you broke it down' - is a serious affair, but is no less elegant and quietly beguiling. 'The love I have for you makes me so damn grey' goes the funereal ending. We all know what to expect of girls who sing about love like this, it's usually a cry for help from the ones who need it least of all."

Annette Buckley is one of the finest contemporary Cork vocalists/songwriters of her generation.
Originally it was her much enthused performances at the Lobby Bar, Cork that increased her once murmuring fan base into a cascade of local public recognition. To witness Annette Buckley on stage is an experience nothing short of religiously spiritual. A magnificent voice carries an endless flow of mystical lyrics. Each syllable, one feels, is born of that rare place where few souls go, and fewer still have gone and survived. It is a place where the eye of innocence stares into the darker outposts of humanity, and returns more deeply wise.
Since then many have witnessed her inspired performances throughout Britain and Ireland. Annette has opened for Juliet Turner in her sell out date at the Cork Opera House and the USA-based Ryan Adams at the Kilkenny Rhythm 'n' Roots Festival in May 2001. More recently she has added Maria McKee, Nina Hynes, Eleanor McEvoy, Neil Halstead, Amy Rigby, Jane Taylor, Sharon Lewis, Polly Paulusma, and the legendary Soft Boys to this number. In March 2003 Annette took part in the Forward the Revolution Tour in the Village, Dublin, and also played as part of the 2003 Cork Mid-summer Festival in the Everyman Palace Theatre.
In addition, Annette has received further coverage on national TV and radio, performing on TG4's Pop TV, and receiving airplay on 2FM'S Jay Ahearn show.
In November 2001 Annette signed a publishing contract with Toby Darling Limited in England. Toby represents many artists worldwide, including Irish band The Frames.
'Untitled' Annette's first six-track EP, launched in July 2001, is an eclectic collection of both polished and bare songs.
It is her voice which sets Annette Buckley apart from her peers, giving her that vital edge on all those who fall into that ever-burgeoning category of singer/songwriter.
"One cannot but be impressed by Buckley's powerful range" Michael Carr of 96fm/inside Cork authoritatively states.
In 2004 Annette collaborated with many Cork bands on their debút releases including Green Monitor, Stanley Super 800, and Rest's debút album 'burning in water, drowning in flame'. Rest also appear on Annette's forthcoming release.
More recently in May 2004 Annette embarked on a 6 month Irish Tour, playing piano with Dundalk Songwriter Stewart Agnew.
During this period she finally finished her debut album 'the ever changing colours of the sea' due out in April 2005.
Annette also features in the 'Reflections of Cork' book. This is in association with the European Capital of Culture 2005. This book is an insight into Cork life by Cork people. John Spillane, fellow singer/songwriter also features in the book.
'Reflections of Cork' is now available in all good book shops!
