West Coast Gangsta Rap

notes

L.A.'s Gangsta Rap innovators that came under the wing of the West Coast legend - Eazy-E in 1995 are back to help resurrect the West Coast gangsta rap scene by doing what the West is really known for - not giving a f@ck. A follow up to the best selling Chicano Rap album "Eastside Drama", "Payback" is taking the music back to the street mentality and away from the industry politics and Top 40 radio formats. MC's Toker, Wicked, Danger, and Producer Rikko and D Black dug deep to craft one of the best album both lyrically and musically in the last decade. Can a song about the L.A. scene be more honest than "Eastside Drama" featuring the legendary Eazy-E? Brownside, along with their producers, address the music industry exclusion of West Coast artists better than any song. It's straight truth wrapped up in a hardcore narrative.

While many Chicano rap artists are still trying to find their identity, Brownside is steering the car back to innovation and originality. A great selection of tracks and Rikko's live playing to go along with some sleek interpolations, Brownside crafts music that captures the L.A. lifestyle -- sex, love, politics and danger. This is pure West Coast, Southsiders music. “Payback” is so hard that Eazy-E would have to tip his hat to Toker and company for such a hard core explosion. Tight tracks include "Sureno Vida", "Hittin' Switches", "13 Reasons" -- well the entire album is great. No skipping any songs on this banger.

One of the great things that make this album great is that the production doesn't overwhelm the artists and vice versa. Rikko and D Black reached into their gangsta rap bag and produced a classic album with 15 songs.

There is nothing better than hearing dope street MC's with a chip on their shoulder. Their best work gets done when their backs are to the wall. What Brownside accomplishes with "Payback" is pure performance under pressure.
Southside's best.
