For the better part of the last two years, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Coby Brown has been writing and recording the songs on his latest release, Stars and Curses. For Brown -- who spent most of his energy in 2006 going through cancer treatment for Ewing's Sarcoma (and all of 2007 recovering from it) – it’s a new start.
“I’m a lot clearer on what I want to do now and how I want to do it. I definitely hear a clock ticking.”
A Boston native, Coby moved to Los Angeles in 2002 from NYC after two years of crossing the country to be with his now wife, an LA native. They married in October 2005, and Brown was diagnosed in January of 2006, just as he and his band, the 11:11’s, were beginning work on a record with producer Justin Stanley (Nikka Costa, Jamie Lydell).
“Not exactly how you want to spend your first year of marriage, but we figured it out. But getting sick did shut those sessions right down,”says Brown. “Turning what we’d completed into an ep (2007’s Time Is Now) kept me sane.”
Once given the all clear from his doctors, Coby reached out to producer Will Golden (Gary Jules, Meiko, Buddy) and the two began going through the songs Brown had written while in treatment.
Recorded between November 2007 and April of 2008 in Los Angeles, Stars and Curses features guest turns from David Immergluck (Counting Crows), Ollie Kraus (Sia, Tom McCrae), Fil Krohnengold, (Ian Ball, Buddy, Brian Wright), Holly Conlan and Al Sgro (Gary Jules, Buddy). Says Brown, “We really took our time and were able to have all these great players come in. Will and I had talked long ago about doing some work together, but the timing had never worked out. Thankfully, this time it did.”
Stars and Curses is set for a late summer 2008 release.
