notes
BROKEN ENGLISH, founded by Javier Muniz and Ishmael Huggins, has a lengthy track record of packed houses and deliriously-satisfied audiences throughout Santa Cruz, San Francisco, the Monterey Peninsula, and several points around Northern California. This album CARIBBEAN CRUZ will allow the group to present its core repertoire for the first time to a mass audience.
THE CARIBBEAN CRUZ is a perfect title. It takes listeners on a sensuous sonic journey through every port of call in the Afro-Caribbean universe. Its tracks represent stops along the way through the musical worlds of SALSA, SON, CHANGUI, CHA CHA CHA, among others. Its contents reflect the fundamental beliefs of Mr. Muniz and Mr. Huggins, that our main duty to ourselves is to enjoy life. That enjoyment has already been communicated at every live performance. CARIBBEAN CRUZ now brings the feeling home, for the greater enjoyment of the American and worldwide listening public.
That philsophy has been substantiated within every track of CARIBBEAN CRUZ. Such is the power of BROKEN ENGLISH that this landmark debut album includes the talents of three authentic Cuban prodigies from the Cuban Band "Charanga Habanera"-- pianist TIRSO DUARTE, bassist RANDOLF CHACON and timbale player YULIEN OBLEDO.
The even numbered tracks on the CD are percussion interludes
that explore the Afro-caribbean diaspora. Enjoy the grooves!
