Composer, pianist and songwriter BRENDA WARREN brings to her compositions an improvisational approach featuring elements of classical, pop and new age music. Her music creates special moods insinuating an emotive and autobiographical feeling in each piece. AS YEARS GO BY, Brenda's second CD release, showcases her talents as a solo pianist and creative artist.

CHILDHOOD DREAMS was Brenda's debut release from which she received airplay throughout the world. Her music has been featured in several television programs and she has composed the score for three documentaries. The music from As Years Go By and Childhood Dreams is the score for the PBS documentary Edens Lost and Found.

Brenda began playing piano at four years old and at age eight began her musical journey at the Detroit Conservatory of Music. She went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Music from San Francisco State University. After graduation she perfomed her improvisational piano works throughout the Bay Area. She also co-wrote and produced the original musical comedy BREAKFAST IN MARIN which was nominated for a Cable Car Award for best original musical.

Primary among Brenda's influences are Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, Erik Satie and Keith Jarrett. She was profoundly inspired by Keith Jarret's solo piano improvisations on The Koln Concerts. Her music has been called "evocative" "soothing""haunting" and "joyful".

  • A Beautiful Gem of a Piano Recording

    Here's a beautiful gem of a piano recording. Brenda Warren's "as years go by" is touching and evocative, many of its tracks laced with a tender melancholy or somber reflection, yet never to the point that the inherent charm and beauty of the music is lost amidst too much dread and sorrow. The best single word to describe this album would be intimate. Somehow Warren found a way, no matter what the overall melody, mood or tempo of the piece, to impart a sense that she is giving us a glimpse inside her life, as played out on the piano. Highly recommended.

    On As Years Go By, Warren's sophomore release, she moves through each original piano piece with ease and magnificent skill. Synthesizer and strings back some of these perfomances. The moving music evokes all kinds of emotions and scenarios, with songs titled "Remembering You" "Tea in North Beach" and "Blue Island." "Waterfall" is a fantastic track that makes equal use of silence and sound. Warren's connection with her piano creates beautiful songs that convey deep passion for music and life.

    “As Years Go By” is an intensely moving exploration of the depths of the soul. Deeply emotional and introspective, one senses the healing process of fully expressing oneself is taking place as we listen, healing our own wounds as we go. It has been ten years since Brenda Warren’s previous solo piano recording, which was acclaimed worldwide. She has been writing songs with lyrics in the meantime, but felt it was time to come back to her roots in solo piano. Lucky us! Eight of the eleven tracks are solo works, and three are accompanied with strings or synth. The improvisational elements in the music give it a sense of freedom to develop and explore. “Blue Island” is one of the more upbeat tracks, and opens the CD with a swirling and sparkling feeling. I had the pleasure of seeing Brenda Warren perform some of the tracks from this album live, and “Remembering You” is so emotional that it still deeply effects her every time she plays it. The mournful cello and violin accompaniment adds even more depth to the feeling of loss and remembrance. This is an amazing piece. “Sitting On A Star” is a bit lighter in mood. Dreamy and gentle, one can feel the peace of sitting on a star, watching the wind, moon, and other stars. “Waterfall” reminds me a lot of Janie Horton’s fluid, melancholy music. Very improvisational in feeling, this piece is both peaceful and evocative. “Ancient One” is one of my favorites. Dark and mysterious, this is an ensemble work with piano and string quartet. It reminds me a little of the theme from “Requiem For a Dream,” with an unsettled mood and a lot of inner turmoil. I like this one a lot! “Moonlight” is another favorite. Dark, but very peaceful, it is both flowing and graceful. “Goodnight” follows “Moonlight” almost as a continuation of the mood. “In the Light Again” is another beauty, full of hope and moving forward. Brenda Warren has produced a stunning collection of piano solo and ensemble works with “As Years Go By.”

Mere words cannot express the range of emotion in these instrumental piano gems, each one a soothing sonic surprise. The string arrangements on a few of the songs add depth and character to what is already a fully fleshed out treat on its own. A triumphant follow up to Warren's debut CD, Childhood Dreams, we can only hope she doesn't make us wait so long next time around.
