notes
Brainclaw is a two-member Electro/Industrial music-making organization. They specialize in aggressive, technology-driven and futuristic music made with machines. This is the electronic music project of David and Tara Giuffre, both Eastern Pennsylvania, USA natives. Industrial Nation magazine described Brainclaw as being “Reminiscent at times of And One and others, later period Skinny Puppy, this male/female duo really know how to put great tracks together. With their ready-for-release production and excellent songwriting abilities, Brainclaw are a sure bet for a label signing soon.”
Brainclaw was founded by David Giuffre, electronic musician since 1984. David created the Brainclaw Project in 1988 while attending Ithaca College. Brainclaw moved from a basement diversion to a serious project in 2003, when Brainclaw was augmented with a new member, drummer, programmer, vocalist and partner, Tara Giuffre. The current live show lineup also includes hybrid drummer James Sewell and live synthesist Lorie K.
Brainclaw’s 2003 self-release of the Insekt/Angel CD heralded the first major effort to spread the Brainclaw virus worldwide. USA electro giant Metropolis Records picked up the CD for distribution, and has sold copies all over the world. The special Brainclaw Live shows have been a raging success as well. Warner Brothers licensed a Brainclaw song to appear on the release of the Matrix Revolutions DVD, and Columbia Tri-Star have contracted to have two more songs appear on the release of the Spiderman Collector’s Edition DVD. Then, Warner Brothers licensed four more songs for use all over the Matrix Box Set DVD release.
Brainclaw made the cover of British music magazine KALEIDOSCOPE, with a full interview, stellar CD review and a track on the issue’s free CD compilation. Additionally, Brainclaw secured spots on the highly anticipated Interbreeding III, IV, VI and VII (featured artist) CD compilations, which have enjoyed international distribution and continuing success. Most recently, the new Brainclaw song Strike was placed on Static Sky Records compilation Electro/R/Evolution Vol. 1 and another new song, Fallen, made it’s way on to famed UK compilation Cryonic Tanz Vol. 4. Brainclaw songs have been in heavy rotation on internet radio stations stateside and abroad, with a heavy emphasis on European listenership. Just Google the word “Brainclaw” to get an idea of the current buzz on the Web!
Brainclaw has just signed a fantastic deal with the BLC Productions label, and the new CD "Dead Monsters" will be released in April 2006.

"Fiery trips for the dancefloors!"
author: VIRUS! Music MagazineOn their current album Morrisville, PA residents Brainclaw aka David Giuffre (synthesizers, samplers, drum programming, lyrics, vocals) and his wife/partner in crime Tara (drum programming, sound design, effects, lyrics, vocal) seduce us with another tasty electro industrial menu. Already the opener "Softkill" states the talent of the duo with regard to dithyrambic melodies, choruses, sound details and atmospheres. The track holds loads of energy and drive, fizzling and bubbling sounds and the alternating vocals of David and Tara. This duet way of singing is generally one of their trademarks and adds an exciting edge to the music, sometimes mystic, sometimes aggressive and dangerous. Further on it doesn’t get boring to listen cause the two musicians include loads of breaks, experiments and different style elements; apart from EBM/electro and industrial there’s also some darkwave and even gothic flavour inside. It’s not possible at any time to compare their music with other bands' outcome, and that's a plus, too. Sometimes good old Xorcist come to my mind, but that’s only a tiny little splinter of their influences. Albeit I partly feel reminded of the mid/end 90's, their music also spreads some 80's flair as well as some up-to-date fragrance. "Insekt/Angel" serves everything that a good record must include. Fiery trips for the dancefloors ("Deadlife," "Incessant Surveillance") can be found as well as midtempo pieces ("Insekt/Angel") and touching ballads ("Burn My Will"). The remixes in the end of the record show the title track in various lights, so this is a nice bonus. I’m sure this band is about to find a record label very soon. Recommendable.
"High-powered industrial abandon!"
author: Regen Music MagazineAfter leaving Carfax Abbey in 2002, David Giuffre focused his creative energies into his new electro-industrial outlet, known as Brainclaw. Coupled with his partner Tara, the duo have crafted an album of high-energy electro and brutal industrial; from the pounding beats and grooving rhythms to the distorted synths that belie the lack of any guitars, Brainclaw's sound takes the danceable power of EBM and infuses it with the musical diversity of harder-edged industrial. Combine this with some high-quality production and clever song arrangements, as well as the vocal interplay between David's guttural tone and the piercing yet sexy Tara, and you have an album like Insekt/Angel. While the actual style of music is nothing new, Brainclaw make up for it with song brilliant songwriting. From the outset of “Softkill,” the lyrics explore everything from bodies to robots to infection to war, all ingredients in the recipe of the dystopian cyberpunk fantasy; the chorus for this song is especially catchy with its refrain, “Take your power back.” A song like “Deadlife” just resonates with the dance floor, with its stomping beat and simplistic chorus. The electronics are especially punchy on “Voluptuosa,” mixing some hard beats and eerie synthesizers with some sexually suggestive wordplay. “Incessant Surveillance” and “Abaddon” have some effective, if sometimes unorthodox bass lines along with some twitching arpeggios, sounding almost perfect for a fast-paced videogame soundtrack. Also included are three remixes of the title track. Endif's remix goes for a sparser arrangement, adding a frightening ambience in place of the layers of distorted synths, making for a creepier track. The two Eurovision mixes approach the song from a similar standpoint, but with a more straightforward techno beat, although they are not dramatically different from each other. If Brainclaw must be likened to anyone, the best comparison would be if the sound of 51-Peg or Zeromancer was mixed with terror-EBM, with a little noise a la Terrorfakt thrown in. This is industrial rock without the guitars, but not lacking in any of the genre's force and possessing more variety of sound and vocals. Insekt/Angel is an album for an audience looking for a new brand of industrial, free from the necessity for dance beats and popish melodies. Not that Brainclaw's music is devoid of melody, but they employ a greater sense of songwriting than most of the banality of synthpop. There is very little that can be said against this band… their music is that damn good. If you're looking for some high-powered industrial abandon, Brainclaw's Insekt/Angel will not disappoint you. “Take your power back!”
"The aural equivalent of love at first sight!"
author: Side-Line Music MagazineBrainclaw are the husband & wife team of David & Tara Giuffre & if there's any justice in this world they are going to be massive. David has actually released a number of albums under the Brainclaw name in the past but as it marks Tara's musical debut it's being treating as a new start for the band & they've even taken the brave step of funding & promoting it themselves. The duo's self-belief is rewarded with an album that completely blew me away as soon as I first heard it & is sure to bring them fans worldwide. Their influences are noticeable with Nine Inch Nails circa "Pretty Hate Machine" being a reference point on the majestic "Voluptuosa" & the instantly addictive "When The Dark Rains Fall" (which has already proven it's worth by being included on both the "Spiderman" & "Matrix Revolutions" soundtracks) while many of the riffs owe a debt to Gary Numan, not least those that grace the opening "Softkill". However, the wide range of rock, industrial & dark cyber elements, mixed with an undoubted talent for top-drawer songwriting, as further proven by the flawlessly executed title track, which is the aural equivalent of love at first sight, gives Brainclaw a sound that is very much their own, obviously synthetic but possessed of a very human heart & that side of their sound is emphasized more forcefully by the hauntingly beautiful "Burn My Will", where David's vocals resemble those of Pitchfork's Peter Spilles to an uncanny degree & as a startling contradiction, the anthemic cyber-rocker "Unsafe" which is sure to be massive. It's also nice to see a the band taking instrumentals seriously, as on the excellent "Icarus Wings", which fits in well with the album as a whole. By Contrast the remixes by Eurovision & Endif never stood a chance of equaling the originals so it's hardly surprising they sound so lackluster in comparison, despite some promising melodic touches. Without a doubt Brainclaw are one of the most exciting new talents to emerge for some time so don't miss out on this, get infected now!
