Not pretty but beautiful, intense and haunting, highly recommended
author: Peter LewisIn Kaingk, Bragod have produced a haunting and beautiful piece of music, giving us what Wales must have sounded like 500 years ago. Mary-Anne Robert's voice is extraodinary and a wonderful complement to Robert Evans's strong, rythmic crwth and lyre playing. This is the old Wales pared to it's essence. Interpreting some more recent tunes in the old way, the CD is modern and medieval at the same time. There is no extranneous romanticism except that which comes naturally to folk music. On their website they do a great job of explaining the how's and why's of this music. I'll just say it is not always pretty but it is always lovely somehow, and I hope to hear much more from Bragod. Thanks for your efforts.
Dynamic music for the bold of heart
author: James WhitfieldThe Kaingk album is an impressive example of what can be achieved when both perseverance and attention to detail are combined between the minds of the inspired. Despite the gross daytime-television artwork of the packaging, Robert Evans and Mary-Anne Roberts continously capture a sensibility which, I reckon, is quite rare between only two musicians. Well studied but not academic, full of life but not dipsy, strangely anachronistically foreign sounding yet full of a sense of home-coming so particular to the Land of Song. This is music made of strong attitude.
Different! If your looking for something not mainstream this is it.
