notes

Celtic Jazz~Celtic Groove~Celtic Cool...Awesome arrangements and instrumentation...Spirited melodies and driving rhythm...Fresh and original.

Bounds Street is listed on the Mississippi Arts Commission Touring Roster and has performed at the Mississippi CelticFest, Jackson's Highland Games, Roots Reunion on WUSM, Jubilee Jam, the Performing Arts Tour in Appalachicola, Florida, and the Jasper Highland Games in Jasper, Alabama. Tim Avalon (fiddle, mandolin, banjo and guitar), a Mississippi native and recipient of the Mississippi Folk Artist Fellowship for 2000, is the creative force behind the group's diverse repertoire and innovative arrangements. In addition to his numerous original compositions, Tim breathes new life into traditional tunes. Whether it be a reel on slide guitar with a Delta Blues drawl or a lively Old Time fiddle medley, Tim moves from instrument to musical genre with skill and ease. Mary Fitzgerald (percussion), a native of Mississippi, is an expert player of the bodhran. In addition, she brings energizing Latino influences (congas, bongos, shakers, tambourine) from her Hispanic heritage into traditional Celtic musical forms. Heather Mitchell (bouzouki, flute), a Mississippi native, brings dynamic and skillful bouzouki playing to the band. Heather and Mary ("the engine room") provide the driving rhythms that are a hallmark of Bounds Street. Heather originally played flute in the group and still, on occasion, graces the stage with a flute tune. Susan Wellman (tinwhistle, lead vocals) is from the foothills of North Carolina. Susan draws upon her Appalachian background as well as extensive classical training in performance of traditional dance tunes and songs. Chico Sittman (sound man, jewes harp) is a native of Florida. He runs the sound system for the band and also, on an occasional tune, joins in with the jewes harp, an ancient instrument that is traditional in early American music. May Morning Dew is Bounds Street's second release; the first, Diaspora, was released in the spring of 1998. Said Chuck Lipsig of Green Man Review, "Jackson, Mississippi should be proud of being home to this group."

  • Celtic music and song at its best.
    author: Bedell Johns

May Morning Dew is another great CD from Bounds Street. The variation between serious and fun, music and song is perfect. Just as in the 1st album, the music is powerful and creative, while at the same time remaining true to traditional Celtic music. Having a group like Bounds Street in Jackson, MS is amazing!!!! Though I don't miss Jackson, I do miss them.
