About Born Broke:
The band formed ten years ago when guitarist and vocalist Jeff Holbert (25), played drums in a different band with bassist Adam Hamilton (26), who also played guitar. The two continued to play together over the years, and changed instruments to create a different sound .. the sound of Born Broke. The band went through a succession of drummers before finding the prefect match in 16-year-old Spencer Wynn, who had previously played with the band Paradoxx. The trio locked into a chemistry that solidified their sound, and began playing restaurants and events all around Henderson County. Today, Born Broke often plays in Cat Daddy..s Bar and Grille and Hannah Flannigan..s on Main Street in Hendersonville. Born Broke plays the kind of music that reminds you of the time when it was all about fun and dancing, and partying, and having a good time. They have an active set list of over 60 songs, running the gamut from Johnny Cash covers to hard-rocking originals. The band has many straight-ahead tunes, but retains the ability to really stretch out the occasional jam into a grooving psychedelia. Unlike some acts out there, Born Broke never seems to sway too far in one direction or the other, but does a rather excellent job of balancing the jams with the solid organized songs. Each musician in the band can play their respective instruments very well, and know how to balance with the others. Holbert was once primarily a drummer, and it shows in his rhythm playing, always concrete and propelling. His lead guitar is exceptional in that it has that character of soulfulness that sings through the notes. Wynn is far too good a drummer to be 16 years old, and has that ..salt.. that some musicians three times his age never achieve. One highlight of Born Broke..s shows happens when the spotlight singles out Wynn during a solo. More than any other aspect, the thing that makes Born Broke unique is Hamilton..s bass playing. Not content to be the backup or rhythm player, his bass playing is in all the right places, consistently filling up any spaces left by the other two musicians. Hamilton is a testament of what good bass playing can add to music when the bassist steps up and participates.
