notes

Pietro Tonolo - Tenor & Soprano Saxophone - Classical music's loss was jazz's gain in 1979, when Pietro Tonolo gave up a career as a classical violinist to become one of Europe's greatest jazz saxophonists. Around that time, he moved to Milan, where he played with some of Italy's best jazz musicians, including Franco D'Andrea, Luigi Bonafede, Larry Nocella, Massimo Urbani and Enrico Rava. In 1982, Tonolo joined the Gil Evans Orchestra, playing with musicians Steve Lacy, Lew Soloff and Ray Anderson . He later went on to perform in jazz clubs and on radio and television around Europe and the USA, both as a sideman and as a leader with his own band. Tonolo played regularly with Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band from 1999 to 2004. Other notable collaborators have included the likes of Kenny Clarke, Roswell Rudd, Sal Nistico, Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, John Surman, George Lewis, Barry Altschul, Joe Chambers, Aldo Romano, Kenny Wheeler, and Tony Oxley, to name just a few. In addition to his jazz works, Tonolo has been active on the contemporary classical music scene with the group Sentieri Selvaggi, performing works of acclaimed Dutch composer Louis Andriessen. When not on the road, Tonolo lives and teaches in Venice, Italy.

Luigi Bonafede - Piano - When he turned 17, Luigi Bonafede left his private, classical music training behind and started what he considers his "second life" with the help of James Brown, John Coltrane and all things jazz. Upon discovering the Capolinea jazz club in Milan, Bonafede first listened to and eventually performed with many of the most notable Italian and American jazz acts, including Larry Nocella, Massimo Urbani, Pietro Tonolo, Enrico Rava, Maurizio Giammarco, James Moody, Pat LaBarbera, Kenny Clarke, George Coleman, Benny Golson, Billy Cobham, Slide Hampton, Freddie Hubbard, and Lee Konitz. Bonafede is a profilic performer and recording artist, having appeared on more than 42 albums to date. In addition to piano, Bonafede is an accomplished drummer. Bonafede currently lives in Milan, Italy.
