notes
Bob Stewart’s baritone embodies the warmth and understanding to turn the great standards of American music into poetic statements. But when his career was beginning to flower, the bloom was fading from his line of work.
“I had been making the Down Beat polls as one of the “10 best male singers“ he said the other day, “and I was a featured recording artist with MGM RECORDS. Everything looked great. Then Elvis and Rock and Roll came along and changed everything. When rock- and - roll came in and took over the music industry, I decided to find another way to make a living” he said, “ I had always loved to fish so I decided to study for a Captain’s license. I eventually owned and operated a 90 foot party boat that sailed daily from Sheepshead Bay, NY. The boat was called the“BIG CAPT BOB”.
A chance meeting with pianist Harold Danko in a downtown NYC night spot some years later, started Bob to thinking about resuming his singing career again. Harold invited Bob to sit in for a few numbers. “Although I hadn’t sung in person in years “ he said, “ it all seemed to come right back.”
Since Bob has “come back from the sea” he has been performing for enthusiastic audiences and receiving great reviews. His recent “ TRIBUTE TO THE BIG BAND ERA” concert at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City with Virgil Scott and his 16 piece jazz band received a standing ovation.
Ron Bierman, of RAMBLES writes, “Rod Stewart, Cindy Lauper and others are turning to the “Great American Song Book” because it contains the best popular songs ever written but Bob Stewart got there first, knows them inside out and has the type voice that they were written for!”
DJ, Jerry L. Atkins of KTXK-FM, Texarkana, TX says, “Bob Stewart is one of the great straight - ahead jazz singers of our time!”
Bob’s latest release “ DID I REMEMBER” is a compilation of some of Bob’s favorite ballads from some previous releases. Also included are two previously unreleased tracks featuring the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra recorded at St. Peter’s Jazz Church in New York City. They are “GONE WITH THE WIND” and “MY FUNNY VALENTINE.”
Bob still has his Captain’s license.
