notes

Keyboardist Michael Bluestein has made a name for himself in the Bay Area playing with artists such as guitarist Will Bernard (of TJ Kirk), drummer Steve Smith (of Vital Information and Journey), saxophonist Anton Schwartz, and vocalist Jacqui Naylor.

He has also toured with Grammy Award winning artist Shelby Lynne, and Linda Perry of 4-Non-Blondes.

Michael's keyboard work recalls legends like Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett, while evoking the simpler soul of Billy Preston.

On his new CD "Wild World", he runs into diverse, yet always grooving terrain.

This is a trio recording with Jon Evans (of Tori Amos's group) on acoustic and electric bass, Bay Area legend Jason Lewis on drums, and Michael on piano and fender rhodes electric piano.

Original tunes like "Natoma", and "Pulsar" snake through drum "n bass rhythms, while his renditions of Steely Dan's "Black Cow", and Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" find Michael in a more funk, and gospel mood.

His version of Cat Stevens' "Wild World" is an imaginative harmonic and rhythmic re-invention of the tune and one of the best on the CD.

He also delivers a thoroughly swinging version of the standard "My Shining Hour".

Also of note is a spirited version of Mcoy Tyner's classic "Effendi".

This is truly a unique, diverse, and above all beautifully conceived and performed CD.

  • Bluestein pilots his JAZZ-SHIP to the "WILD WORLD"....
    author: Bob Peppler

It's time to meet the CREW who will be taking you on a musical TOUR. Captain Michael Bluestein is at the controls and will be piloting the Keyboards during this journey. Jon Evans is the Co-Pilot and will be backing up your Captain on Bass Guitar and setting the tempo. Jason Lewis is the Navigator-Drummer who will be setting the course and providing the beat for the journey. Now its time to relax, sit back in your comfortable chair, and let these three Musicians guide you on a fantastic JAZZ trip that will take you to several unique Concert Locations. The first concert destination is a wonderful visit to a stage featuring the music of Steely Dan. Bluestein's rendition of "BLACK COW" sets the musical tone on his latest CD release "WILD WORLD". It's Michael's soft, upbeat stroking of the ivories that will totally captivate your inner soul. If you close your eyes and free your mind, you can actually see Donald Fagen and Walter Becker nodding their approval while they snap their fingers to the beat the Band lays down. Don't get too comfortable in your chair because as soon as the song is over, the Captain and Crew will rush you off to the next location. Suddenly you find yourself being ushered to FRONT ROW seating at a CAT STEVENS concert. The lights dim, curtain rises, and there sits Michael Bluestein at the piano expertly guiding his nimble fingers to the sound of CAT's best song, "Wild World". Yes my friends, your ears have never been treated to a sweeter sound than this. I was totally amazed by Michael's unique jazz rendition of this song. Finally folks, this magical and mysterious concert plane lands at a destination, that in my opinion, is the BEST site on the CD. This is where if you free your mind and relax your thoughts, you suddenly will be sitting right next to Paul Simon. Together you will be listening to Michael Bluestein and CREW deliver an absolutely remarkable version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water".... Yes my Friends, you are about to hear an award winning, stunning rendition of one of the Best Songs ever recorded. I just can't describe how beautiful this song sounds when Michael caresses the Keyboards and extracts a sound from the piano that simply screams of Brilliance. This song alone is worth the price of this CD. If you haven't taken a musical journey in a long time, you owe it to yourself to book a flight aboard Captain BLUESTEIN'S Musical Express and journey to the "WILD WORLD". You won't regret buying this one FOLKS...... BOB PEPPLER

  • a very tasteful and diverse recording!
    author: Jazzwest.com

Piano man Michael Bluestein offers a wonderfully diverse trio CD, complete with interesting pop cover tunes, standards and originals. Joined by Jon Evans on acoustic and electric bass and the ever-present Jason Lewis on drums, the trio offers up jazz renditions of material from Steely Dan ("Black Cow"), Simon & Garfunkel ("Bridge Over Troubled Water"), Cat Stevens ("Wild World"), and even Led Zepplin ("10 Years Gone"). The altered chords on "Wild World" gives a whole new take on the well-known song. Bluestein flexes his piano muscles with the addition of McCoy Tyner’s "Effendi," and the trio romps straight-ahead with the Arlen/Mercer tune "My Shining Hour." Many of the original tunes, such as "Natoma" and "Vista," are played on a Fender Rhodes electric piano, giving an airy, slightly funky feel to the music, a la Chick Corea during the electric Miles era.
