piano soul ala Bruce Hornsby and Steely Dan

notes

These are 6 very finely crafted songs centered around the piano. Michael's songwriting style brings to mind artists like Joe Jackson, Steely Dan, and Ben Folds. His singing is very passionate and inspired, and the songs have strong hooks that stay with the listener.

Keyboardist Michael Bluestein has made a name for himself in the Bay Area playing with artists such as guitarist Will Bernard, drummer Steve Smith, saxophonist Anton Schwartz, and vocalist Jacqui Naylor. He has also toured with Grammy Award winning artist Shelby Lynne, and Linda Perry of 4-Non-Blondes.

When i received the CD I listened to it a couple of times and enjoyed it. Now a couple of months later, i listen again and not only enjoy it but i know it - the rythms, the notes, the words. There's a bit of Donald fagin in there and Joe Jackson with a softer feel, .... Its not often you find a single CD that's great played loud or in the backgound.

This CD is in my car disc player and gets played about 4x a week! I know all of the words and make my friends listen to it when they get in the car! It's really good. "Did I Really Know You" is perfect in relating the torture of a relationship that we've all had..."Hate To See You Go" is brilliant & funny...it made me laugh so hard, I had to replay it again and again. "Renee" will rip your heart out, so sad and so beautiful. Michael is a touching songwriter and an accomplished pianist, and the band is top-notch. Enjoy it...I do!

It is a rare artist who is able to create songs that go straight to the listener's emotional center. Michael Bluestein has managed to accomplish this in an era when music seems to be getting more and more cerebral. Don't get me wrong, this is an incredibly sophisticated and intelligent album, but its complexity serves to create an emotional experience that runs deep. In particular, the title song, Reflections, evokes a profound sense of loneliness and vulnerability through its haunting instrumentals and lyrical truths. It is a song that you will want to listen to over and over again.
