notes

"Pure Artistry...this album reveals the inner most thoughts of the human psyche..a musical epiphony."
Mike Vincenti - thefreezer.com
May 18, 2004

"In a category all by themselves...Once again, Blow Up Hollywood captured my imagination with thought provoking soundscapes and wove an intelligent provocative story within their music. Intellectual music for everyone, how many bands are making music like that?"

"Overwhelming and astonishingly powerful...Blow Up Hollywood's full-blown huge sound is a marvel to behold. The songs evolve slowly, taking on one idea after another without sounding forced. And when the summation arrives, it's like a revelation from beyond the veil. Blow Up Hollywood is definitely putting itself in the running as a truly "important" band."
Aiding and Abetting - July 1st 2004

"This anonymous band inhabits a musical terrain that can be soncially and rythmically traced to the seminal 1970's masterpiece "Dark Side Of The Moon". The orchestral backdrops coupled with acoustic guitars, somnambulent ride cymbal patterns, instrumental interludes, cosmic effects and dramatic dynamic shifts all hark back to the heady days of lava lamps, day glo-posters, and mind altering substances. The other good news is the songs are as good as their influences. "Oceans", a sleepy love song embellished with legato slide guitar textures and celestial harmonies is the centerpiece here, running the gamut from subtle to bombastic. The title cut emerges as an epic tale of alienation with an area rock chorus to kill for. And Goth fans will appreciate the spooky romance of "being there". For fans of Radiohead, solo-Dave Gahan/Martin Gore, and Messrs, Waters, Gilmore, Wright and Mason, this Fake is the real deal."
Tom Semioli - Amplifier - Sept/Oct 2004

"Very heartfelt and expansive in scope, Blow Up Hollywood's release Fake has an orchestral feel that is hard to ignore. The production and song construction are first-rate. These anonymous guys really deserve credit for a piece of artwork like this." (SJM)
Impact Press - Sept 2004

"Very rarely has a band knocked me completely off of my noggin and left me speechless. Thanks to a very good friend and the timely contact of their promotions material, the band Blow Up Hollyood has done that for me. On first listen, this album has stunned me in a way that few albums could. It's an album that - I must preface this - is meant to be heard in the correct atmosphere. You need to be listening to it at night, preferrably in a somber mood. You need a great bottle of wine (red, preferrably). You need the room lit up in candles, to initiate a mood. You also need someone special besides you in order to appreciate the power coming out of the speakers. There are no words to describe the feeling you should get while listening to this music, but the mood should put you in the position to receive what BUH is trying to show you."
Michael Ostrich - progscape.com - Sept 2004

"They know how to write the sort of songs that sound large enough to fill an arena, and with Fake they have created a virtually flawless album, from the songwriting right down to the production."
Eddie Fournier - GhettoBlaster Magazine - Sept 2004

blow up hollywood appears to be dreamy.. intense.. their sound is totally uniuqe and their music is.. above all.. a long journey into themselves, I think, and at the same time.. when listening to this.. you kinda understand that these guys are asking you to go on a journey of your own.. it wakes you up, sharpen your senses or just send you fast asleep, dreaming while you're still awake.. blow up hollywood is a name I'll be remembering for a very long time.

  • Ahh yeah....

The instrumentals remind me of Sigur Ros and the vocals are bad ass. This avantegarde sound really does something to you personally. You just have to experience it. FAKE is an experience.

incredibly cool band and great website. Very mysterious members though; I can't find out much info about them except that they're from New York. No matter, it's all about the music. Both discs are masterpieces. Hoping for more soon from this band.

  • Edgy, exploratory and ambient !
author: Laura T Lynch of Kweevak.com

Fake is the second release from the ego-less Blow Up Hollywood, their focus is on the music and lyrics. This contemporary rock band has been compared to early R.E.M, Radiohead and others. They write serious songs about life, death, politics and the world. The CD is well produced utilizing sparse electronics with acoustic and electric guitars, piano, synth, bass and drums. Fake explores a variety of moods and contemporary styles while occasionally utilizing classical and jazz instruments. Their songs are ambient, edgy, exploratory and surrealistic. I liked the CD as a whole but the first two tracks really grabbed my attention. 'Born' has a strong beat with dramatic keys combined with a striking vocal style and subtle sound effects. It is followed by 'Fake'. The title track starts off slow and soft as it gently builds up to more powerful, layered instrumentation and vivid vocals. The anonymous Blow Up Hollywood demonstrates that they have star potential (if they want it) on their latest CD!

Slow waves of recognition, like waking up under heavy blankets, forcing light through rusty eyelids. There’s a squishy pang of ‘what’s going on?’, but the room is cozy, mmmm… you don’t have to get up and try to figure it out just yet. There is a hazy, sad, completely wrapped up feel to this gorgeous music which lies stretched across the lines of trip hop, melancholia, and ambient. Make your own mental film from the gliding sheets of strings and washed out guitars, picture the protagonist sitting, holding his head to the sound of lilting acoustic guitar, thinking quietly to himself, ‘what in the world do I do now?’ It is grand and nostalgic, emotional and dramatic, pleading and sensitive; it is an excellent tribute (or companion, for that matter) to the place where we all convalesce now and again, the place that exists only for us to make clear the division between what just happened and what happens next.

  • "Fake" born at the right time...
    author: Lilith, San Fancisco

Wow...thank you, Blow up Hollywood, for giving birth to your long awaited new album..."Fake" most certainly is a brilliant follow-up to the first CD, a must for every profound soul walking this planet...full of powerful lyrical as well as musical landscapes, the music guides you into a state of intriguing mystical reality: deeply reflecting upon our lives, relationships, and loves while being comforted by the ethereal musical atmosphere. It is rare to find music at that level of depth and artistry. Thus, the new album truly is "born at the right time"... Thank you, Blow up Hollywood!

  • Blow Up Hollywood: Fake. Another exceptional CD
    author: Kevin McCarthy

"Fake" is not. It's the real thing. Although each track stands beautifully on its own, taken as a whole, this music is almost operatic in scope. There is lots of good, very good music out there, but it's rare for me that I just want to sit and immerse myself in what I'm hearing. This is one of those rare CD's. Blow Up Hollywoood's first CD and this both fall into my "essential" category.

  • Great Band!!!Great CD!!!
    author: Autumn

I really love the vibe of this cd and especially dig the keyboard sounds. All the tracks are good, which is rare these days, but my favorite is track #2. Keep it coming... whoever you are.

  • A brilliant follow up to the first album!
    author: Lew Fisher

Blow Up Hollywood's brilliant first album dealt with death and what awaits us on the other side. The new album, entitled Fake offers us a glimpse of life- through the eyes of a dying relationship. A relationship that both parties know is finished, yet neither wish to let go of. The band have managed to do that which seldom happens; release a second album with the same level of emotion and precision as the first, while bringing a different aspect to the listener. Musically, this album spotlights amaturity in arrangements that were fledgling ideas on the first album. The line-up is the same and as before offers no indication to the band members or equipment. If this brief overview of the new album sounds like Blow Up Hollywood have gone soft, think again. Like the brilliant first album, this album carries the same stark imagery that impressed me, and many a listener two years ago. For the Blow Up Hollywood novice, I would have to say this album will definitely suit fans of Stupid Dream era Porcupine Tree and Pineapple Thief. Be warned however, you won't be listening to a watered down clone of these two fine groups, rather a new band whose unique sound should find a way to your heart and mind. As before, take the trip with Blow Up Hollywood. Fake is very real............ Blow Up Hollywood are taking pre-orders on this album beginning June 1, 2004.
