notes
BLEI is a three piece rock band out of Portland, OR with a raw, innovative sound. Their brilliantly sequenced release, In Day As Dark, glows with pure eclectic noise. Deep, melodic male vocals backed by a gentle, airy female voice brings something unique to the table.
Q & A WITH THE BAND:
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
ZACK: " I feel like Susan is the muse for half of the songs. Those songs are inspired by love. The other half are fear based. Love and Fear. Songs like "Over" and "Last Breath" come from an obsession with death and the afterlife.
WHY ARE YOU A MUSICIAN?
SUSAN: "The love of music and art have been a part of my persona for as long as I can remember. It was the same for Zack. It's eerie how similar our musical tastes and art backrounds are. It was fate that drew us together.
DO YOU PREFER PLAYING LIVE OR IN THE STUDIO?
ZACK: "One hand feeds the other. Like Ian MacKaye from Fugazi says,"The record is the menu and the live show is the meal." We like to mix it up a bit live. Some songs have sections where we really don't know what's going to happen. We only know when to come out of it when the drummer changes beats."

This album is a cross between Nick Cave and Mazzy Star
author: Rock Stars For HireBlei-"In Day As Dark" (Eternal Records) This album is a cross between Nick Cave and Mazzy Star. It's an extraordinary musical gem found at the bottom of the musical sea, mummbeld jumbbled in all the other crap that is out there. If you run across this review then please do us all a favor and buy this album. The album is ahead of it's time as much as it reminds you of music played back when Nick Cave was around. It's soothing, subtle as it is romantic and mood setting. If I took a warm bubble bath with some scented candles I would be listening to Blei.
There's a certain etherea, coupled with the gentle rock drive.
author: fishcomcollective.netThere’s a little alternative. There’s a noticeable dose of the retro-referencing of Franz Ferdinand but without the self-consciousness. There’s insistence and aggression, hurt and bitterness, but expressed without aggro loudness. Sure sometimes the singer raises his voice, but he doesn’t shout. Dig the difference? The band’s attitude comes off with a smirk but it’s a smirk that resides beneath a darkened, creased brow. The instrumentals are on the quieter side with guitars whose distortion never goes beyond light fuzz. There’s a certain etherea, coupled with the gentle rock drive. The music likes to crescendo when the emotions run strong, but as I’ve already noted, it’s a quick swell that threatens to surge before pulling back, as though the band members were angry but would rather tease you with it and make you nervous, like a dog that’s growling and wagging it’s tail at the same time. Blei’s music is very pretty and emotive and it’s nice to hear something from the emo/indie corner of the music scene that channels, not melancholy, but wry, resigned bitterness with which the songwriters have come to terms and accepted as part of their enlightened, edgy world. review written by: Upchuck Undergrind
Classical elocution dons wild eccentricity to create a sound that is unsettling
author: Shut Eye RecordsWith clever arrangements laced in warm vocal exchanges, this kindred outfit craft a sound that is erratic and eloquent, simplistic yet rambunctious. Classical elocution dons wild eccentricity to create a sound that is as unsettling as it is beautiful. Like the title might suggest,"A Beautiful One" is my particular favorite., FANTASTIC!---Shut Eye Records
