BAND BIO

To truly understand who Black Rebels are, one must journey to the getto Medina in Dakar, Senegal and visit two brothers with a burning vision. Manou and his brother Dr.Jeannot, surviving poverty and personal difficulties, came to the realization of Rastafari as a way of life. They saw a dream of coming together with people of all colors to bring the world the message of love and conscience through Reggae music. In those days, Black Rebels was carried by the amazing vocal energy of Manou singing with the musicians around
Dakar. While studying teachings of Rastafari and the Bible, Dr.Jeannot was called to journey to the US. and two years later, Manou followed his own beat and traveled there also.

In the United States they met Kalpana Devi. Dr.Jeannot and Manou saw Kalpana's tremendous contribution to life and spirit. They recognized Kalpana as an original vocalist
and African dance artist, performer, educator, poet and mother with a dream of bringing unity medicine through original music. At the time Kalpana was directing an ensemble of creative artists, living her dream of spirit and livity.
Together Manou, Kalpana and Dr.Jeannot understood the blessing and the revolution in their balance of energies and a representation of Oneness, their creative union was secured, they all agreed to serve Jah and the people by offering their music to the world community.

Manou says; "We are bringing culture, African roots and Jah culture...the beginning of humanity."
Kalpana Devi says; "Every life is a spark of divine light...Our music is our love to the world."
Dr.Jeannot says; "We can heal..with Jah in our hearts...In playing the music, we want to reach everyone's hearts."

Black Rebels is important: A celebrated African Roots Reggae band emerging original, in a powerful time. Honoring vital elements of Jah music, Black Rebels is a living icon of Rastafarian inspiration. A Black Rebels concert is a super natural event.

The band was formed 15 years ago in Dakar, Senegal, West Africa. Black Rebels, from creation, is a universal union of musicians from Africa, America and Jamaica, playing original, exceptionally visionary African Roots Reggae.

In the River Valley of Massachusetts, Black Rebels has often been described as "The Valley's best reggae band", and the Amherst Collegian, Amherst, MA writes,

"Black Rebels is one of the most striking reggae groups you'll ever encounter. The three lead singers deliver sublime and irresistible vocals. The band propels African Roots Reggae soul. The Roots Reggae music....Powerful...and mesmerizing sounds come together to sing praises to Jah and to spread the word in their spirit. They are a unity guided by Jah and inspired with the love of the universe. Soul rebels standing strong.."

"To be Continued", Black Rebels first recording was released in 1994. "Thank you Jah", "Black Rebels Live" and "Trinity" followed. "Jaam ak Salam" is currently being released. Nationally distributed, Dirty Linen magazine writes; "..Few new bands brave the more difficult challenges of composing new, intelligent and trail blazing music...Black Rebels are one such band..." and the Nantucket Review writes, "Black Rebels...gets my vote as the best reggae act out there..." Black Rebels have performed in Africa and around the United States.

In Africa, performances at the Blaise Senghor Institute in Senegal, Reggae Sunsplash in Senegal and the Baia das Gatas Festival in Cape Verde exemplified the bands outstanding success at reaching the hearts of people all over the world and delivering the message with grace. At the Baia das Gatas festival in front of 50,000 people and an international television audience, Black Rebels so moved the people that the audience rushed the stage in an effort to praise the band and join in the celebration.

Black Rebels is heard on radio stations throughout Africa, Europe, the Americas and the world. In the US, Black Rebels has performed hundreds of concerts at noted festivals, venues and colleges including the International Festival of Arts and Ideas in New Haven,CT, SOB's in New York City, sellout crowds at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, MA, and Guilford College in Greensboro, NC.

The Vermont Reggae Festival describes the band..."The pounding reggae beat...A hot horn section...sweet harmonies...THE BLACK REBELS, AWESOME!" The Black Rebels has in addition also shared stages with....Burning Spear, Culture, The Wailers, Israel Vibration, IJahmanLevi, Toots and the Maytals, Mutabaruka, The Mighty Diamonds and Big Youth...among others.

In truth, Black Rebels is a living Roots band with a glorious, uplifting, original message. They are the reckoning force in the world of reggae music today.
